What are you using for dirt?

Most "dirt" on alot of MRs looks like large angular rocks. Just think if any human being could much less would walk on that kind of surface. Put a human figure foot on your dirt to see how easy it would be to walk on. The Metrolink engineers at Taylor Yard complained so much about walking on mainline ballast they put down pea gravel! Using a dirt surface at industries can also cause problems w/ mud when it rains. That's why most have asphalt or concrete surfaces.
In HO or even N scale you should not even be able to see dirt at normal viewing distances of 2'-3' (150'-300').

It is actually ballast dust, it's a product sourced here in Australia called Chucks Ballast

I like it! I have been looking for a good way to simulate dirt... think I will give this a try! JMS

Good that Gary has somewhere to operate whilst awaiting his own layout completion ;)

Guy in yellow car must be a railfan, he never moved off after the loco had cleared the crossing ;)

    Paul,

How did you wire it and what components did you use?

    Thanks,
    Dale

Nice! Is the crossing ONLY operated by the switch? Or, do you have an automatic way of operating it? JMS

the crossing came with a flasher unit, I just wired it through a switch, the crossing is manually operated like most would be in any industrial operation

Nice! The circuit I built(using plans from the inter-web) has a "switching operations" switch built into it. It turns the flashers on, and once the switch is turned off... the flashers stay on until the "off" sensor it triggered. Great thing to have when one has a manually operated switch for a "run-around" located a couple of feet(scale) from a crossing. JMS
