hello all again, in my infancy with becoming a prototypical modeler, I am finding i need to renumber some like boxcars, and covered hoppers. Is it "realistic" to paint a box over the old number, and decal with a new one for 10 "like" cars? Or is it less neccesary to have different numbers? I think you guys know where i am going with this Pardon my lack of confidence in my speaking, i really am more comfortable in the auto mechanic forums, but will get to know you folks soon enough.
It is realistic, and many railroads did paint over reporting marks to assign new ones. On the models it is also unnessary as you can remove the lettering with a pencil eraser and then apply decals for the new numbers. For example, if you have 10 cars numbered 123456 you can erase the last two digits with an eraser and then use decals to create 123455, 123465, 123450, etc. I've done this with a number of cars and if your careful, no one will ever notice the difference.
I usually start with A less agressive solvent(like alcohol) on A cotton swab, To remove road #'s. If they are being stubborn I will use Floquil Dio-sol. Decal setting solution works on some Atlas locos. Microscale makes decals for just about any loco or car you want to #. I have pictures of some of my renumbered locos, If you would like to see them let me know!
YOU BET !! pictures would be great. Boy i could rebuild a car engine, but trying not too screw up my railroad really stresses me out.
Here is a couple of pics. Hope these didn't take too long to download. N-joy, Scott [ 18. November 2002, 05:12: Message edited by: Scott Stutzman ]
