Does anybody have or know of a successful method for removing a manufacturer's road number from a locomotive. I have an SD80MAC from Kato for which I want to remove one digit from the road number in order to make a change. What I DON'T want to do however is remove/damage the paint color of the loco itself under the digit. PLEASE help.
I've used a pencil eracer on Bachman models. Sometimes decal setting soulition will work. It depends on the material they use to make the lettering.....Mike
I have had success with Micro-Sol's setting solution. I tried it on a Proto 2000 loco and the decals came right off. You need to let it set for about a minute or so and then I rub it off, gently, with a q-tip. I also tried alcohol and that seemed to remove the paint before removing the decal.
I've also done what Mike mentioned. I use Walthers Solva set and a pencil erasure. I've done this on Bachmann and Walthers equip. It takes quite a bit of rubbing, but the paint will not come off (never have done a Kato, test first!) The finish where the lettering has been removed will be noticably flatter than the surrounding area. I assume you will be replacing the road #, so you should first apply a gloss cote, decal, then apply flat or your preferred finish. You will no longer be able to see a differance. Gary
