A rear end collision occured in Cleveland friday Nov. 30th on the CSX line that runs southeast through the inner city. I only have a few details that my friend, an engineer for CSX told me today. An intermodal train collided with a general freight coming out of a tunnel at approx. 25mph. The engineer claims that he had a red over yellow signal on the block that the rear end of the train he colided with was occupying. No-one was seriously hurt but a relatively new lead unit, a Union Pacific SD70 or 75 took a pretty good beating. I am not aware of any TV or newspaper coverage of this collision so I am assuming it was a fairly minor occurance. If anyone can call any rear ender a minor occurance.
Minor occurance? Before I retired we were stopped at Ohiopyle pa. to report a sun kink. And a three unit helper following us down the mountain ran a red block while watching girls sunbaithing on the river rocks. Rear ended us at 30 mph destroyed the caboose derailed seven cars and moved a 7000 tun train 60 feet with the air on and broke the helper brakemans leg. So call it minor if you care to. Arthur.
I doubt any train collisions are "minor occurances".... it is not exactly like the parking lot fender bender! Harold
With the local news media around here, If it doesn't bleed, it doesn't lead.....or even get a mention mosttimes. I guarantee you if there would have been a firey crash every local network would have been in their helicopters, over the scene, fanning the flames to broadcast it.
