Cornell Red sure looks great on an Alco! When you're on that (quite spectacular) bridge, whatever you do, don't look down... Nice photos. Keep'em coming!
Sadly, the former NYNH&H Poughkeepsie Bridge over the Hudson River had only another year of life after this photo was taken. Although it was a steel bridge, a fire in 1974 was to destroy a significant length of its wooden track structure and , taking the bridge out of service. The PC couldn't afford to repair it and it didn't need it, preferring instead an alternate route. The bridge survives today as some sort of hiking path, but I don't know anything about it.
From Google Street View, still there, now known as the "Walkway Over The Hudson": At least somebody's using the tracks that go underneath, on the west shore.
Fun Fact: I think it was in the 1880s that the PRR bought the West Shore in an effort to stick it to the NYC and operate a line deep into the heart of NYC territory. The NYC was working the same, alarming the PRR with construction of the South Pennsylvania. None other than J.P. Morgan himself brought the two railroad's Presidents together and pressed them to put an end to this nonsense. As a result, the West Shore was acquired by the NYC and construction stopped on the South Pennsylvania.
I captured only one shot on the West Shore at Haverstraw, NY. As I recall, I was checking out the station when a pig train suddenly appeared and I had no chance to set up. I was caught on the dark side and had no time to run for a wider view. July 1980.
GE lineup in Hearne, Texas back on April 16, 2012. AC44CW 6717 (EX CNW 8815) leads an old B40-8 (SSW 8046) and EX SP 261 off the former SP Dallas/Houston line onto the former MP Palestine subdivision.
I hit the swap meet in the historic Livingston, Montana Depot last Saturday. An added bonus was a BNSF coal train waiting for the 3 unit helper push over Bozeman Pass.
I was thrilled to have an airborne view of a westbound NH freight with an FA/FB set approaching that bridge upgrade from Connecticut in the summer of 1947. My brother was taking flying lessons and the instructor let this 12 year-old kid brother come along. I still can still visualize those ALCO's. They were the first I'd seen and they were gorgeous. Wish I could have seen them on the bridge, but my brother was more interested in flying. LOL
I'm impressed that its entire length isn't "protected" by chain link fencing that ruins photography. Wow, I'd like to hike that someday.
The round-trip is about three miles. If you're not used to walking that sort of distance, then maybe bring along a set of wheels. When I visited the Walkway, I took my bicycle with me and was glad I had it.
That's spectacular. At one point, a little over 15 minutes in, I was thinking that this would be a great candidate for the "Insert Train Here" thread. Then a train magically appears on the opposite shore... I'd like to hike that one too someday.
The following video (beginning at about 6:30) shows an Alco FA-FB-FA set running on the Maybrook line between Poughkeepsie and Cedar Hill yard.
Did you also make it to Helena? I had planned to make a mad dash over Sunday morning. But my work schedule was unexpectedly changed.
