Does anyone out there have access to the book about these items? I acquired a bunch of Great Northern tie date nails last summer. Would like to know a little more about them. perhaps learn if any have value? Boxcab E50
date nails The best reference info on railroad date nails is a 3 volume set entitled "Date Nails and Railroad Tie Preservation" by Jeff Oaks. The cost is $30.00 post paid. The address you send your dough to is: Jeff Oaks, 3223 S. Temple Ave., Indianapolis, IN, 46237. e-mail: oaks@uindy.edu Phone: 317-781-8799. You could also type "date nails" into your search engine and look for any site that mentions Jeff Oaks and get info.
Thanks for the book suggestion. I have since been in contact with a local fellow, here in NW Montana. (If you collect GN nails, no doubt you'd know of Charlie.) And he's answered my questions. Welcome to TrainBoard! Boxcab E50
I have that book from the date nail guy. Very good reading on all sorts of date nails, of all roads that used them. Also great info on crosstie trestment methods.
I just pulled some out of the siding at Naylor (east of Quincy on the BNSF Columbia River sub) today. The ties were loaded with them, all of them said 66. Kevin
