Hi All, I was just wondering if anyone knows when the Blue bearing caps started showing up. I am unsure what brand and have not found any photos that are close enough to figure it out. I am doing a unit coal train from the late 80's probably early 90's and think it would be neat to have the blue bearings on it. I like that about the newer trains.
The blue caps signify Brenco Class K (6.5 x 9)bearings, which came into widespread use after AAR S-286 was passed and made effective Jan 1st 2004. This spec effectively forbade the use of the older Class F (6.5 x 12 )bearings on new 286K freight cars. Brenco is one of many bearing manufacturers, but their Class K bearing is bar-none the best on the market, which explains why they are so common.
Thanks for the info guys! I guess that option is out for me. LOL I may just do it anyway, they look too cool. I didn't know about the AAR spec change...but it makes sense now. Thanks again!!
Roller Bearing Protective Cover On this same subject, in Australia, I noticed that many or most of the roller bearing axles were covered with a cap or protective cover on the end. I presume that this kept out dirt or prevented end damage. These caps were many colors, but mostly red or yellow. Not all cars had these, but if they did, you could not see the axle rotate. I do not see this covering at all in the USA. Anyone know about this? Thanks.
I just had the unfortunate pleasure or regreasing some of these style of bearings. they are very similar to friction bearings except they have roller bearings, usually timkin's and use grease rather than oil. every country has its certain styles, thought these look very boring while your waiting at the grade crossing
