Can anyone point me in the direction of a HO model of a UP/SP FE R70-13 reefer? I looked at Intermountain but that seems to be one of the classes not actually done. Athearn have done a Reefer in UP/SP FE paint but don't mention it's class... Anyone able to advise? Thanks in advance.
I have heard that the Athearn cars are R70-20. Do you have a photo of an R70-13? How different do they look from the Athearn reefer?
Nobody makes an exact model of the R70-13, the closest model is the Red Caboose (Now Intermountain) R70-15. The major difference is the R70-15 had a 9' Door and the R70-13 had a 8' Door which would require a lot of changes to the model. Attached is a list of PC&F RR70 cars as produced by Jim Eager on the MFCL Modelers Group. The Red Caboose cars could be used for classes R70-13 to R70-19 as they had a peaked roof. The R70-20 to R70-25 cars had a flat roof. Thanks for the info! I heard a rumour about the Athearn being a -20 too After visiting Colorado RR Museum and seeing UP 906958, a MOW bunk car, a colleague of mine was interested in making one to go with the recently acquired UP MOW hoppers he'd bought. I managed to trace the history of the car to being a R70-13 and like the prototype thought a model of the same would be an ideal starting point... If the only major difference is the door dimension I suspect he could probably live with basing it on a R70-15 model, I know I could, and at the end of the day i'll refer to rule #1! Thanks again!
Please remember that Intermountain has two different PC&F Reefers. One: The ex-Red Caboose R70-15 (Also the Con-Cor car is the same without detailing if you can find one). Two: Their own model of the R70-20 (Same as Athearn's car but better detailing). Rick Jesionowski
