Joe, I have here four UP GP35 which I would like to strip and repaint in some nicer colors. WHY are the shells glued together ? actually why are two of the four shells glued together ? two have no glue and are easy to disassemble but not the other two ? how can I get rid of this glue ? will 96% alcohol help ?

please do not glue your shells together - some people don't like UP and buy them only to repaint them... !

Maybe you already know about them Steve, but the GP35 is offered in an undecorated, partially assembled, and unglued version too.

Steve; Like Robert said, there are undecorated GP35's from MTL too. I used one to paint a D&RGW unit.

These come unpainted and unglued, with the brass parts package seperatly. This was you have no paint to strip or clog detail.

If you use these be sure to wash and primer them prior to final painting and clear coating.

steve, i know you don't want the hassle of stripping shells. but if you want to send the UP shells to me i will send two stripped shells at the same time, so you'd only be set back 3-4 days, and they'd be ready to go. the UP shells are more expensive than some of the others, and i think it would be a shame to strip them. so, here's an alternative.
PM me or email offline if you want to consider this.
    dave f.

p.s. what are going to paint them?

Dave, thank you for your offer but a. I'm from New Zealand and b. they are already soaking in alcohol... :D

I've got them from a friend to modify and paint them, they will end up as some sort of a GP38 in gray and red color... ;)

David, I finally started on my GP38 conversion. My problem is that I can't find any of the radiator and intake grills you used for GP40 conversion. Do you have a source for the parts, or you can tell me where I can buy them. I decided to build the easy part first.

    john,
the rear radiator grills are N scale box car walkways. they can be bought seperately, but if you want i'll send you a couple. i sand them thin and cut them to length and glue on. after hunting for something "grill like" to resemble the grills on the GP35 i saw that the walkways and the GP grills are almost identical! and their width is just right. problem solved.

they come in a blister pack with about 15 (i don't remember for sure) so i have more than i ever plan to use. let me know.

now the vertical slotted grills in the front (dust bin??) are another story. atlas N scale shells are my source for these (get an SD70 shell and you'll have lots of vertical grills to use. these you need to cut off the shell, sand thin (be careful not to get too thin) and then trim to size. scale wise they are probably too wide apart, but visually they look ok. besides, they are the only game in town (that i know of thus far.).

    hope this helps.

    Glue

Hi, sorry I didn't respond sooner. I've been up in Portland at the GATS show up to my eyeballs in Z scale. I had a blast with the Cascade Z Group, great people and a lot of talent there. As for your question. That was a production decision, not mine. The new GP 35's and 9's will have snaps that hold the shell to the platform. If you have problems stripping the shells, let me know and I will see what I can do to help you out.

    Cheers

    Joe

    Steve,

Why don't you just buy the undecorated ones?

    Hey Everyone,

I think what Steve is saying is that the UP GP35's he has were purchased before the undecs were made available by MTL. It appears he is looking for help in modifying the UP units in their current state.

    Any ideas?

    Hey there Jeffrey!

As I remember, way back when the GP35s first came out, and Robert Ray began stripping the shells in earnest, he just used a very sharp hobby knife, and VERY carefully ran it along the glued seams to free up the pieces.

That's my memory, but I could be wrong......

Nice to see you around these parts Jeffrey. Tim kept claiming he was making and/or finishing all these neat projects for Jeffrey, but we weren't sure that you actually still existed. ;)

I hope you'll post some pictures of all the cool stuff you have now. Please share!

Two items may work- a very sharp Xacto knife (number 11 blade) and some nail polish remover. The latter has some acetone, which works on ACC to dissolve it. Use sparingly & with caution so as not to dissolve the unit as well. This is assuming ACC was used on the shell, of course.........

I used the #11 blade to seperate the shell parts. They are not glue all the way. Just part of the shell. Just do it slowly and carefully.I did on three shells, and haven't damage one yet.
