I am trying to find out more about this locomotive for my own research purposes. I am thinking of detailing and painting up an Atlas like this one. The best photo I have found so far is this one from rrpicturearchives: SPS 70 First question is about the coloring. Is that "black" really black, or is it that dark greenish/brownish whatever I see on some other SPS equipment? Also, the lettering appears to be the same shade as that yellow striping on the nose. I would like to know if this is true.
I'm sure it's a green. Looking at photos, various films used, aging, reproduction methods, weathering, it sure is hard to tell! Boxcab E50
That's what I was thinking. The color shift in some of these color images shakes my confidence in picking the right color. My club's resident SP&S expert said that this is a dark green that's so dark that it's almost but not quite black, but that they would fade over time to more of a dark moss green.
It's been a million years since I last saw a prototype in close up view. Hard to believe that in a few months, it will be forty years... Anyhow, to me that color seemed to flatten out with weathering. In losing gloss, it changed the appearance. Boxcab E50
Was it darker than the green used in the yellow and green SP&S scheme? I was told the yellow and green version used the same green the GN used in its orange and green scheme.
The SP&S Green was a dark green. Almost Pullman Green on the stripe scheme in the photo. Later SP&S went to the "Wide Band" paint scheme with the delivery of the Alco C-424's The Green was GN Green and NP Yellow.
