Hello again to you all, I have a problem with a C44-9W stalling, and making a very loud noise. Do you have any ideas what is going on? I have checked the following..... -Made sure there was enough lube. (I added a small amount) -Checked the gear-flywheels ect.... -Cleaned the whole darn thing. It IS NOT the decoder. I tried another decoder to get the smae problems...so I doubt that Digitrax has anything to do with it. Thanks for any help, Dane N.
My first guess was the gears but you said you checked that so I would just trouble shoot. By this I mean rool each truck by its self, free wheel the motor, etc. Then make sure every is together "snug", not to tight. Couple of questions for you Dane. Where is the loco stalling? Is it stalling on a certain point, or just randomly. That very loud noise could be a short somewhere, which would be an electrical problem (maybe not the decoder, but the way you have it installed). I have yet to run my C44-9W, so I could not give you any experience with that. I don't know if this will help, but I had a problem with my UP engine of this type. I discovered that the circuit board had slipped out of position and was shorting. I secured the board in its proper position and that stopped my unexplained stalling. I don't recall that it was making any unusal noise, but you may want to check the positioning of the circuit board just in case. Good luck. ------------------ Rett
I have had the same problem, and as suggested by the UP Guy, check the board. Also apply power to the loco whilst removed from the track, ie. without load, this may give you something else. Good Luck

I have checked the trucks. The unit stops on random points..... I really am confused too. hhhmmmmmm. I'm thinking its the decoder because I can't think of any thing else that would make the locomotive stop in any given spot (one with a decoder any way). Let us know what happens. Dane, Do you have the light board for this loco or did you get it DCC RTR. If you do have a light board, try running it without the decoder. At least this way you may be able to eliminate the decoder from the equation. Matt
Don't take this the wrong way, but... have you checked your track? I always try to ascertain whether it's track or train first, before disassembling an engine. If the engine stalls in the same place(s) it just might be the track. Keep us posted!
I did it! What did I do, I don't know. It works now. I dissasembled it, took another look, and when I put it back together again it worked. I wonder if something wasn't sitting right in the frame??? RE Track:-I do seem to get dirty track, easily, but that should affect other locomotives too.... I can see why you would think it was the decoder, but it couldn't have been. The loco worked the same crappy way with another Decoder, and with the PC board installed. I think something was sitting wrong in the frame. Oh well.... Happy Railroading! Question- Why is Kato re-running the C44? Did it sell that well???? I think they are advertising too many things to come out at once. I would be suprised if it is all out by 2002 Happy Railroading!
