I'm sure we have discussed this subject, but with the (great!) amount of traffic here lately, my absence for two weeks, and my new experience with this movie, I have to reopen discussion. [IMG]
My wife and I took the grandkids (boy 12, girl 10) to see The Polar Express at an IMAX theatre in 3-D. Wow!! In reflection, I have to consider that since the entire plot was a fairy tale, the antics of the train and locomotive were in context. It was to me a conglomeration of Las Vegas stage show, Six Flags Magic Mountain rides, a Broadway show, NASA adventure and a Hollywood extravaganza. To summarize it in one word, "entertainment." The kids, wife, daughter and I really enjoyed it.
Some of the details like the moon in the background of some of the shots, the eagle carrying the ticket, the interior workings of the North Pole factories, were really something. The animation of the locomotive running gear was superb.
Some have criticized the "thoughtless disregard for safety" portrayed with kids walking rails or in grade--how many of us have not done that? [IMG]
I loved it. Any comments??? [IMG]

We took our 5 year old and 3 year old to see the movie. It was a little too loud and a little too much for them. My oldest was worried the boy was going to fall off the passenger car and cried (she and Mom left the theatre for a little while). In general all movies are very loud to them. But they liked parts of it, espcially the North Pole scene at the end.

I really liked how they worked every page of the book into a scene in the movie. I also really liked how Hanks portrayed a conductor who seems really pressed for time and trying to the keep the train on schedule (his facial reactions to his pocket watch). In the end, we you sort of understand that time is really irrelvant as far as Santa is concerned, it made it that much more funny.

I took my two kids to see it last weekend. The 8 year old's face was the best part of the whole thing. His eyes got wide and he sat on the front inch of his seat from start to finish. Lots of fun throughout. His first question when we got out was "Can we buy that?" Looks like I'll be getting one more DVD this season.

I haven't seen it, but my daughter took our granddaughter to see & she loved it. I even bought her a Lionel PRR Flyer for Christmas, which she was crazy about when she unwrapped it [IMG]

We went to see it down here (in Spanish) a couple of weeks ago with junior (14) and niece (12). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the others enjoyed the story. I spent most of the time enjoying the great animation of the train, including all the great details.

    Regards

Rats! We don't have an IMAX type theater here.

Anyone heard a rumor for release of this on DVD?

My wife and I saw the film shortly before Christmas. We found it thoroughly enjoyable. Unfortunately, the one IMAX on Connecticut did not run it, so we have not seen that version.

The issue if the loud sound is a matter you can take up with the theater management. Sometimes they will actually turn it down. We saw the new Phantom of the Opera at a different theater complex from the one where we saw Polar Express. The sound there was just right.

In the theater complex where we saw Polar Express, for another film, I asked the manager to torn down the sound. He got a little testy, but offered to refund my money. I told him I did not want a refund, I wanted him to do the right thing. He turned down the sound--a little.
