Kawasaki Rail Car will build 72 new powered PA-5 cars and refurbish another 350 for the agency’s Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rail system. The 36-mile system connects Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken and Manhattan.

The $240 million contract calls for deliveries of new cars to begin in 2022 from Kawasaki’s factory in Lincoln, Nebraska, and tested at the Japanese company’s facility in Yonkers, N.Y. The latter will handle overhaul work between 2018 and 2024.
