DRGW 491, Golden, CO Manitou & Pikes Peak Ry. cog steamer 1, same place (CO RR Museum) CB&Q O-5 Northern (can't remember the number, sorry)
Bob, the "Q" engine at Golden is 5629. Who's that handsome dude with the 491? The above shot was taken in Battle Ground, WA last weekend. This is SP&S Mikado 539, the locomotive which will be traded to the Grand Canyon for their smaller Consols 18 and 20, to be run by the Mt. Hood Scenic RR.
Steve, I'm glad you put that on there. I saw it in your RI gallery and was going to suggest it, since I had just added the 539. I'm still trying to find out who really owns the 539 and what his connection is with Mt. Hood. Supposedly this swap is going to happen. :confused2: Ken, to answer your question posted in a comment on this photo in Steve's album, here's a quote from Rails to the Rim by Al Richmond re GCRy 18, 19, 20 and 29: "Alco built all four for the LS&I. Of these, No. 29 is the oldest and largest. They saw continual service hauling iron ore to the docks of Marquette, MI, from their date of delivery until 1960. All had been completely rebuilt at company shops in 1930. The LS&I retired all four in 1960 and sold them to the Marquette and Huron Mountain Railroad for use on a scenic line in the area. Only number 19 saw any service on the railroad and the others remained in storage until sold to Slack and Mattox in 1985." Slack is John Slack who bought 18, 19, and 20 for his Lake States Steam Transportation Co. at Laona, Wisconsin. He left 19 and 20 at LS&I and moved 18 to his operation. Steve Mattox bought 29 and moved it to the Mid Continent museum in North Freedom, Wisconsin. Both men sold the engines to the GCRy when approached by them in July 1989.
Jim- I'd be interested in learning who actually owns the 539. If I recall correctly, wasn't originally donated to the City of Portland? On display nearby where the 700 sat for many years? If the 539 leaves, I'm going to be quite sad. It belongs in the Pacific NW! Boxcab E50
Ken, the 539 was donated to the city of Vancouver, WA and sat in a park there for years, where I first saw it in 1996. It was then sold to the City of Battle Ground and moved there, but I don't know when. I do remember seeing photo coverage on the net. According to "another" site, it now belongs to a Brian Fleming. I don't know his connection to the Mt. Hood, however.
D&RGW Spreader 044 is in its element in Hot Sulphur Springs, CO at a civic center or similar building:
This is at the same place the CP Royal Hudson was (is) being rebuilt. Shes in the shed behind this engine.
AT&SF 1129 Las Vegas, New Mexico charliec posted a couple of pics of AT&SF 1129 in Las Vegas New Mexico. While passing thru town recently it is where I stopped to feed the kids and took a few shots of it myself.
countinued Now I'm quite certain that when Santa Fe donated this mighty engine to the good city of Las Vegas they had a vision of it in a beautiful park like setting. Although it appears to be in a vacant lot it really is a park. I have to say that I am impressed it still has much of it's plumbing attached and hasn't been badly vandalized at all. Better that she sits here untouched than some inner city slum.
0-4-0 Lion, on display in the State Museum in Augusta, ME. It's posed on wooden rails with iron straps, and the rails are on rock sleepers. Built circa mid-1840s.
