I just recently converted a regular athearn sd40-2 into a hi-nose. I painted the cannon & co. kit flat black. But when i compared the hi nose to the rest of the locomotive the color was off. I noticed that on all ns models there is tiny bit of gloss in the paint. PLease explain to me why the color would be off.

    Thanks Nskid

You might want to try spraying the whole model in either a clear flat or clear satin finish to blend the two colors. Weathering would help hide any color differences.

Was the shell primered all in the same color?

There can be a big difference in color, depending upon the primer you use. Gray, oxide red, or?

Just as an example: (I know you aren't using this type of paint.) If you've ever done automotive painting, it really shows up in a metallic paint. When I was first learning, I had this explained to me. And then shot an old hood. Half gray. Half red oxide. Then did a deep metallic blue on top. The difference was very obvious.
