Looking at the '48 timetable I concluded coming back to Cleveland from Toledo we took both the Pacemaker and Fifth Ave.Special, depending on the day. Are these easier to get info on? Were they a step up from the Chicagoan? If so would they have had different cars and engines? Any info would also be appreciated as I really enjoyed those train rides.

Princeyjo, I'm using my "Mohawk Valley" excuse again in not knowing much about the midwest trains. I sure wish railroad.net was back on line. They had an excellent NY Central group which was rich in history and usually answered these questions within 24 hours. Look in the front of your timetable and find those trains by name. There should be a description of the type of service available. The newest TT that I have is 1944 and it shows the Pacemaker as all coach, and it looks from the stops that it was like the ones we used to ride from Little Falls, NY to anywhere else. If they stopped at Little Falls, they stopped EVERYWHERE on the system. It looks like the Fifth Avenue Special carried some other equipment. Hope this helps some. [IMG]

The Pacemaker was an all-coach reserved-seat train at least through the summer of 1953 when I stopped riding it on the Mohawk and Hudson Divisions. I believe it consisted of matching grey smooth-sided series cars and lightning-striped E7's in the early 50's.

I don't remember the Fifth Avenue at all ... sorry :(
