A pair of nice catches! Although not a big BN fan, I did always kinda like the whitefaces. And I wish I could have the chance to see one of those aircraft moves.
Funny, I just got pictures this afternoon of BNSF GP50 3121 switching the yard in Omaha, NE. It is still in the whiteface too! Thanks for sharing the catch with us!
As far as I remember BN's policy was numbering its GP units with a direct reference to prime mover's horsepower. To that extent, GP38s and 38-2s were numbered in the # 2000 range, GP39s and 39-2s were in the # 2300 range, etc... Thus I suppose that unit #3120 is a GP40 or a 40-2. Furthermore its dynamic brake housing more looks like a GP40/GP40-2's sample than a GP50's. But maybe I'm mistaking anyway.
Its a GP50 still in BNSF world. I think it has been de-rated to somewhere around 3000 HP but even when it was still 3500 HP it was still a 3120. Most likely it was not working but in transit to Spokane on the MEVESPO. The EVESPO and SPOEVE transfer GP's around alot but there ussally just hanging out and not working. Kevin
Those are gp50 radiator grills way way too big to be 40-2 even if the paint scheme didn't give it away. I guess you're looking at the dynamic brake blister, but remember those are asemetrical.
I'll admit I see white faces on a fairly regular basis. I have seen a few disappear and return as H3s, but many of them are getting toward the end of their careen with BNSF and won't be seeing new paint. Between the SD40-2s, the GP50s, the GP39Ms and some others the system has plenty. I posted pictures of the two GP50s in Omaha but there was also a 39M there in white face. I rolled into the yard the one morning and they were all facing the same direction, what a site to see all three at once! NTW Yard still has a few rolling around and there are a couple SD40-2s on a Local in northern MN. Take pictures while you can, ten years from now you'll really be missing them.
<br>as a former BN mow engineer the true gp39-2's were #2700-i think to 2739 as they bought them to replace the aging f's that ran rampant out west during their twilight years then you have the rebuilt GP30's upgraded to gp39 status that ran from the 2700's thru the 2900's 3120 for appearances is a gp50 whether it has been derated or not as frisco had the only gp40-2's to come to the bn roster that i know of and as far as the db housing they are reversed as the short section your looking at on the gp50 would be on the other side of the hood on the gp40-2 and the extended range long section would be on firemans side of the hood if it were a gp40-2 hope this helps with identifying the difference between the 2
