I've got about (15) of the older models without lighting which I am considering DCC conversion. While I am certain I can handle the decoder install, I am not capable of the frame milling. Unfortunately missed out on the exchange program by Aztec. I am running the numbers and wondering if conversion even makes good sense. It might be best to sell them off. Does anyone have any leads they can offer for someone who can charge me to do the frame milling only? Thanks!
You way want to try Streamlined Backshop, but to be honest it might be easier to engage someone to do the whole conversion. Top Hobby trains is another shop that may be able to help. These are both Trainboard advertisers.
Depending on what decoder you want to install, the milling can be either simple or extensive (i.e., the new small ESU and Zimo motor-only decoders need very little room; sound needs a lot). When I do decoder installations for others, the milling, if needed, is included. Have never considered milling as a "service", mostly because it really depends on what the end goal is (and, I don't have a CNC, just a small, manual, Proxxon micro mill). Feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss.
I've watched people mill with a Dremel, but that's a pretty steep dive to take by yourself if you've never converted a loco to DCC before.
I too would be interested in available options in a post Aztec world. I am late to the DCC party and have 6 Kato F units in conversions process, but another 4-5 frames that need milling for basic motor only installs. I thought about selling them off and getting DCC friendly mechanisms, but they don't pull as well, the TCS M1 decoder is cheaper than the drop in board, and it would cost more taking into account the depreciation hit.
I am getting ready to do 3 Kato F7's for a friend of mine. These are using the older frames as well. I do use a dremel and though its not as clean of a milling I have gotten pretty good with it. Been doing them for myself and others now for over 10 years. I'll be happy to assist if I can.
