Hope y'all have a great time and find good bargains. That's too far for me and was ill for the big show in Milwaukee.

    Hello All,

It was a great day for a train show. I took quite a few pictures and will start posting them this evening. I plan on a few posts to get them all on the board. It was a great show! The Rosenberg Module looked great!

    Thanks,
    Dale

First batch of photos of the Oklahoma City Train Show going on this weekend. I think this first photo speaks volumes...

We arrived just a bit after opening from being caught in traffic due to road construction, can’t get too mad at those guys, that’s how I make my living! The venues was the same as last year and there were plenty of folks already there. The building is set up with the layouts in the middle and the vendors on aisles on each side. It wasn’t overly crowded but the place was bustling. There were plenty of vendors on hand to offer a wide range of goodies for anyone. I only saw 1 vendor with non-hobby goods, but they were selling food items.

This is pretty typical of the vendor aisles on each side of the layout. Pretty much all of the big model producers were there as well.

I’m going to insert a plug in for Whistle Stop Trains, they are the best LHS in Oklahoma I know of and Ed was greeting folks warmly as they came into his booth.

In all we spent about 4 and a half hours walking the show and looking for items we had on our shopping list. We didn’t find everything, but we found quite a bit. It was $12.00 to get in, but it was well worth it for half a Saturday.

This layout was extremely interesting, this is a 7/8” scale railroad. The 2 gentlemen displaying it were quite enthusiastic about the scale. The track is G Scale but everything else is scratch built. The locos are battery powered. All the parts are pretty much built by them. The locomotives are all hand built. They explained how they formed the styrene sheet in bends to make the body’s of the locomotives with either heating in the oven or hot water. The softened styren is then formed while soft over wood forms. They use multiple layers of styrene to minimize warpage of the parts. All this in a 4’X6’ space. It was really nice. This is an industrial railroad that delivers beans to Musical Fruit Manufacturing.

    Kids and trains,
There is a pretty active thread over in another part of this board about what is right or wrong with our hobby. One reoccurring thought is we are not attracting enough young people to the hobby. I thinks some folks have figured it out. These photos show a number of ways children were allowed to get up close to the trains. It was nice to see some of the ideas being used.

The NEONs had a small N Scale layout that allowed the kiddos to run a train.....

This G Scale layout was set up about 8” off the floor. Every time I waked by there, kids were gathered around and watching the big trains go by.

There were several Lego layouts set up and were low enough for the kids to see.

This was a 3-rail layout that was low enough for the small one to see.

It was nice to see. Some of the layouts were the normal height that we are all used to. There’s nothing wrong with that and I certainly understand as we get older, it sure gets hard to get low. My POCR layout is a 50” height above the floor. But again, it’s nice to see more of these at shows. The club I’m in is building a new traveling layout, a must for the design was that we were at a height that children could easily see the trains and scenery. We will be using clear plexi to keep hands out, but allow them to get right up to the edge of the layout.

Speaking of small hands wanting to explore, at one of the booths today I saw the following exchange, a father and young son were looking at items for sale, the son was pointing and was pretty engrossed in what he saw on the table. The father reminded him not to touch. The vendor reached down and pulled a box of old parts and junk train stuff from under his table and told the dad that was his “Touch Box” for kids. The young man immediately went to see what was in the box. Quite an idea I’d say.

Pretty much all scales were well represented at the show. I didn’t get pictures of everything, but I hope I gave everyone an idea of how the OKC Train Show went. It was well worth the trip over and we will be there again next year. First up of the random photos is Rosenberg by R L Straw, he’s done quite a job. The modules are well documented with pictures and a map on the front fascia. Good job sir!

Last, so I don’t leave anything out, HO Scale. I like the Kids Only viewing platforms that were there. Another good idea for the kiddos.

    Thanks for looking!

Spent all day up in OKC at the show and had a good time. Some very good modeling skills in display.

The NScale layouts were awesome and collaborations of several clubs.

Got to meet Russ Straw and talk about trains a bit. Lots of photos to download. May try to put them in an album and share. This show should be on your calendar for next year.

What's the best way to post lots of pics to the forum? Wasn't sure about rules or compatability. Have about a hundred from the show I'd like to post.
