Hi, I´m a poor man, I have to build the tank cars by myself. The first ones.....from 25. Regards Rainer
I agree, nice job indeed ! I may be doing the same thing to get the cars that I want like a ACF 4000 Gal car....
Your right on all counts. It was me bidding against you and your right , they were not that cheap , They were still under retail (not by much) I'm not very competitive.. had I known I was bidding against a trainboard member I would have let them go. Just curious , how many of these kits have you built ? Do you have pics ? I'd like to see them. MMA (ex CN, ex WC, ex WICT, ex CMStP&P ) MGR locomotives, Q/A, DSLE. Randy
Ive built a few but dont have any pictures of them and theyre long gone unfortunately. They were cut down to Nn3 tankers for my dad. I still kick myself for doing that lol. Theyre not hard to build but the handrail around the tank is very tedious!!!!! Be very careful as it is fragile. Let me know if you have any questions! Theyre a very nice car and wish i had a crap load more of them! The ATSF ran a ton of them over cajon.
I didn't buy enough of them either , I really thought they would be available for years and years. I did buy a few BEFORE they were available RTR but not nearly enough. I wish I had bought more "wolf head refining" .... "globe refining", "Bell refining etc......I wish I bought more SHPX and UTLX cars as well. Obviously the plain cars are in demand even as kits as we have just seen .. BTW , a "kingtaste" IM car just showed up on E Bay, some tape, black paint and a microscale white RR gothic set you could make a nice GATX car like this one. This car started out as a Specer Kellogg car. I masked over the capy and all the other "typical" tank car letting, sprayed it black, relettered it, weathered, done. I still need to weather the trucks... I'm still trying to figure out what industry to build to use so many vegetable oil cars circa 1949... Randy
Randy, for variety, ever try the old Rapido tank on a new underframe, ladders and trucks? They are actually not too bad, and came in some interesting paint schemes. Also have wire hand rail all the way around....better than the IM's in that regard. About the length of the MT cars, slightly chubbier; maybe 11k gal? Otto K.
otto, whos underframes are you using? Id really like to update some cars with better underframes and get a better look. I think the frames would be the hardest to get. My other option i discussed with jason was to cast the tanks and frames of a variety of cars.
Here's a cheap Bachmann tank (top car) that got chopped up and mounted to an Intermountain underframe . The bottom car is from the late lamented Traincat.... Randy
The new B-man Silver series cars are pretty good. I bought one a month or so ago and haven't seen any since. Could really use about 4 more (black ones of course ) . The Fav Place had them on sale a few weeks back for under 8 bucks, should have jumped then, but I waited a day too long...LOL...Mike
I've been buying the Bachamnn silver series cars as well. You're right , they are nice cars . Ive been pulling them apart, adding more weight and sticking them on intermountain underframes. So far I've done about 15 cars this way. The good thing about the black cars, (the phillips 66 and the frontenac car) is it isn't hard to renumber them. They look great with a little bit of weathering too , really pops out the detail. Randy
Randy, Bob's back, on Railwire. Has a Canyon Diablo project going. Drasko, MT underframe works. Only did one car. If I could get my hands on more, I would do more. Otto
