Circa 1946 and R W Settlemoir sez... This is the NYC/Big 4 depot at Cairo, Illinois. It was at the "end of the line" on the line from Chicago to Cairo, via Danville, Paris, & Mt. Carmel. The best known train on this line was "The Egyptian" which was discontinued south of Harrisburg, Illinois in 1941 and discontinued completely in 1957. The building still stood (abandoned) into the 1960's - not sure when it was torn down.
Interesting architecture, but bears no resemblance to usual NYCS style. Do you have any information as to which railroad company built it, and when?
As far as I know, it was the Big Four. It was built in anticipation of big things happening. They didn't, and the station was unused for the most part. That's all I have, Sorry.
Thanks Roger. I was curious because the architecture looks more southwest, similar to some Sante Fe stations.
Hmm, I posted a reply yesterday and it is not here. It was a nice looking building. I guess we must have everything new today and tear down all the old (and reliable) stuff. Sad.
