I have a few question about N&W Steams, in HO Scale of course. Ok my first question is about the Broadway Limited 2-6-6-4. If you have the Novemeber 2002, edition of Model Railroader its on page 108. What I need to know is, how long is this thing suspose to be. The reason I want to know is because I need to buy a longer turntable than the one I have right now, right now I have enough to fit the Bachman Class J 4-8-4 on but not her tender, which really messes up my operation. Anyways I also have 2 J's, 611 and 608. What I want to know is, is it better to weather them or leave them nice and clean? Which one looks more realistic? Thank you for all your answear and thank you for helping me. Have a good day. [IMG]

I am a big N&W fan myself. As for the length of the broadway limited J, why don't you check out their website

    http://www.broadway-limited.com/

If you can't find anything there, go to

    www.nwhs.org

This is the website of the N&W and Virginian Historical Society. I am sure someone there could give you the actual dimensions. I own a book on the class A's but it is at home and I am at work on my lunch hour. Email me off-list and I will see what I can do.

As for weathering. Up until almost the end the N&W kept there J's fairly clean. The finish on the newest Bachmann J that is not the 611 is pretty close to the proper finish. It was a matte finish. However, towards the end they did get a little weathered looking. I have seen a picture of the N&W 604, in black and white, in her last days of service. She looked rather weathered. I believe the 604 was the first one scrapped.

As for the 611, I have been told that they used a glossy black paint on her during excursion service. That is why Bachman put a glossy sheen on their model. During regular service she was a matte black.

If I were you, I would do very little if any weathering to the J's. Then it would be to the running gear. These locomotives carried the pride of the N&W and the employees were proud of them. It was only the cost cutting measures at the end of steam that allowed them to look a little weathered.

Also if you go to my website, I have a couple of pictures of the 611 that were taken in August 1994. This was near the end of the second to last excursion season for the "Queen of Excursion Steam". That should give you an idea of how to weather it. The pic is

Click on the Railfaning (1:1 scale) pics on the left hand column of the page.

    good luck.

Sean Welcome to the TrainBoard! Check with Neal Wolfe at Diamond Scale Products for a turntable and pit. I have his 134 foot model that I turn my Big Boys on including the tender.

One thing about weathering, I found out. It is fine as long as you want to keep the engine.

However, if you want to sell it later on, the weathered engines on eBay do not bring as good a price as the pristine clean ones do.

Well I looked at the two sites, found nothing. Right now I'm decideing on buying a 135' (18 3/4" in scale size) turntable and I'll need two of them because my layout doesn't go in a loop, its like a real train operation, from point A to point B. no go to point B from point A turn around at the loop and go back to point A. I have a Wye at both end of the layout and while the engine are getting turned around, the switchers can take the cars on the Wye and turn them around. Alot of work for a lone wolf. lol You can still look it up in your book if you want to but you don't have to.

oh and on a more personal note ajy6b, I look at your website at I think your club layout, man yall did a great job! I hope mine can look that good someday! [IMG]

hmm maybe the 135' turntable would be long enough.

Check out the CMR turntable too. There is a person building the CMR, and I have been posting his progress at the Atlas forum. he gives a detailed description of the construction. Both the DS and CMR tables are craftsman kits. The CMR table is more pricey than the Diamond Scale, has less detail, but it is built to take the NYRS PTC Model lll indexer/controller directly. Check out the posts at the Atlas Forum here: http://forum.atlasrr.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11371 Most people consider the PTC Model lll to be the best indexer out there. Check it out here: www.nyrs.com and lastly the CMR turntable itself at http://custommodelrailroads.com/buildingkits.html

I am using the New York Railway indexer on my turntable because it was the only one that I found that could handle the 134 foot table indexing both ends to address all 33 stall tracks and approach tracks.

    Sean,

Thanks for the compliment. A lot of work went into that club layout. The club also has a home page at www.nvrra.org I hope to get my home layout looking as nice, but on a smaller size.

Here's your info sheet. The overall length was 121 ft, 9 1/4 inches. I had the pleasure of riding behind 1218 on one of her last runs from Chicago to Fort Wayne, IN. She was as impressive up close as anything I have ever witnessed.

Thanks for posting that layout schematic of my club. I am a former president of the club, and I can tell you that layout takes a lot of work. But it is fun. We now have NCE DCC running, even wireless.

    Thanks again
