I just got the new Marklin catalogue today and, although I hadn't been planning on buying anything, I looked through it and saw that they are releasing (in August, I think) an exciting new steam locomotive--- the streamlined classic NYC Commadore Vanderbilt, and I must say, that is a temptation to any fan of the Central. But---what would an owner of this loco do for NYC passenger cars? I don't think I've ever seen any in Z scale.
Jay, Azl is releasing a set of passenger cars to go with the Commodore. They are brass, so it will be expensive.
Hmmmmmm I own some, what I consider, expensive brass Z scale AZL locos. I can say that knowing what these brass locos cost, I cherish them more than the average Z scale. When it comes to handling them, I take extra care. I want these running good. Not beat up. Dropped one once to the concrete floor. Almost had a heart attack. Minor repairs and it is running great! Whew!!!!! Spending alot of $$$$ is your decision when it comes to owning fabulous creations. It's Priceless watching them go around the track. Priceless!! Hobo Tim
Is the Commadore Vanderbilt built on the same 4-6-4 mechanism they use for lots of other 4-6-4 locos or an all new design like they used in their GG1's?
This is a good question! Of course I can't answer this one, but I can add speculation to it! Marklin has new ownership! New items are being produced in Z that have yet to be produced before. The Commadore Vanderbuilt is the first of, what I understand, several new releases. It is indeed possible that this loco will have a new chassis design. Then again, it could be a revised chassis from the older locos. Either way, I have taken an interest in it after seeing the photo on the inside cover of the latest Ztrack Magazine! Very nice curves! he only thing I do not care for is the last set of wheels, under the cab, are slightly larger than the other 3 small sets. Tracking must be a problem! Perhaps not! So, either a new design or not, I have my eye on them! Going to look nice seeing those AZL passenger cars behind one in photos! .02 cents! Hobo Tim
It looks like the standard 4-6-2 chassis but with an extra pair of wheels on the rear truck. The rear truck has wheels of different size, a first for Marklin, I think. I don't know if the tender trucks are new or not.
That's good news that it's a new wheel configuration, as it shows Marklin's desire to release more protypical locos. Maybe not the most popular choice for runners, as we all have favorite railroads, but for collectors it will probably to do good. It really helps that AZL is releasing a matching passenger train.
