Hey gang, there is a new safety related website called "The Model Railroad Transportation Safety Board". A fellow New Yorker friend (AKA Johnny Trains) [IMG] came up with the idea of doing a site aimed at model railroad related safety as well as the scale railroad related safety items found on many folks layouts, such as fire engines, police cars, etc. There are pictures of prototype safety items to inspire use at a scale level as well as pictures of layouts. There are safety articles and other alotments. Feel free to check it out here: The Model Railroad Safety Board While you visit , please feel free to sign the guestbook and/or make a submission of your own. We are looking for articles and pics of your own safety related stuff and full credit will be given to those that submit items.

    Hi Russ,

Just took a quick look, and have a few comments.

The "Safety Basics" are a really good idea. You might add a warning about solvent based products, and those with teratogenic effects (tolulene in Tenax7R for example) that may cause genetic problems.

I am not sure about the "Articles" - they seem like something that would belong to the "full scale" safety people.

I really like the signs - they look like something I could use, although I am not sure what sort of safety messages are appropriate to the 1920s and 30s in Canada...

Lastly, you might want to clean out the guest book - it appears you have had some "unsavoury" visitors who are trying to promote their own agendas...

Thanks for the advice Andrew and I did clean up the guestbook. If you have knowledge on the solvents that you speak of, I would appreciate you sharing it. Perhaps you could write something that I could add to the site? You would be given full credit of course.

Even though it is the "Model" railroad safety board, I will be adding prototype, or "big boy" safety advice too because it is my experience that most model railroaders also railfan. It is also great to incorporate prototype ideas with modeling, so there will also be proto pics.

    Happy railroading!

    Hi guys,

I was speaking generally about safety concerning glues, paints, and so on. Advice like spray outside, or with a proper spray booth, what kind of masks minimize harmful vapours, warnings about hot wire cutters, adequate ventilation, etc. I am not an expert with this stuff, and have probably made many mistakes... It's a wonder I'm not dain bramaged...

A lot of this information is available from the manufacturers themselves, and any product to be sold in California carries the appropriate warning - e.g. Tenax. Stuff with toluene (I think I misspelled it in my earlier post) and acetone are rather nasty.

I wonder if your content might be provided by the industry itself? Would Floquil/Testors paint (for example) be interested in providing you with material? I also wonder if some of this info is already out there, but scattered - e.g. greatesthobby, nmra, and other web sites?

I think it is good that you are trying to bring all this info together in one place!
