Hey folks I am new to the forum and I am getting ready to build my dream layout. I have a 3x6 workbench that the layout will circle over and above it with lighting below. The room is a 9x13 bedroom with a small 3x3 closet in one corner. Also... I am using recycled pallet lumber. It is free from work and I get plenty usually in bunches. I have about 10 of various shapes and conditions. I have (6) 2x4 foot platforms that are already built up with 2x4 framing and plywood tops. I will be connecting these in such a way as to make the most of the available space that I have. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Making the most of space available: Oh yes. That is what we all try to do. Do you have any thought on what you wish to model? A region or place? Any specific era? Or will this be freelanced?
Hi, Welcome to the Train Board, glad to have you on board. Sounds like you have a good start. I envy you, pallet lumber is a lot better than the rotting fence boards I "recycled" 25 years...LOL
Welcome aboard, and may I say great choice of roadname! Hope to see more as you move forward, and, as the singer says, "Too much fun...no such thing!"
Wow, thanks for the welcome folks! Status update Well, I am still clearing out the hobby room and building the benchwork. The pallets that I am using are solid plywood top of 1/2 inch with three 2x4's running down the sides and the center parallel. There are two additional pieces of plywood that are on them with I remove with a hammer and crowbar and screw into the open sides to make a flat box of sorts. Then I attach four legs to each "box". That seems like a lot of legs and I don't really know how to attach all of the boxes together to make up the completed benchwork.
Thanks! I am eager to do Mopac. Right now, all I have is a GP-15 Athearn Genesis and a GP-50. I also have a Bachmann F7A that I would like to repaint as a Colorado Eagle. Oh, I have another FA2 and FB2 already in MOPAC colors.
Having done an Eagle inspired paint job on an SD60M (my world my rules...) you're going to have just loads of fun with the masking. But it's doable!
OK, I have been working slowly but diligently and I have come up with an idea for backdrop (background)... A sky blue background with flat clear sheets that are on like a scroll. A small electric geared motor VERY slowly moves the clear flat cloud overlay over the blue. Has anyone ever tried anything like that? I am thinking that it would give an effect like the Walt Disney cartoons of the 1940's that have multiple layers and gives a 3d effect. What are your thoughts?
Well, I didn't hear about it from anyone so what I will do is look into it and take some photographs of it. Anyways... I finished the room lighting. I installed 2 outlets above the drop ceiling and have put up 2 (I will add a third tomorrow). That should be plenty of light. I have been clearing out the room. Organizing and planning. Anyways I am getting real excited about it. Pictures coming soon!
