Here's a picture I took of a CSX unit that has obviously had some new cab numbers applied (where, I don't know!): Chessie ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! Did the unit on the CSXphotos site get wrecked and another one assume its identity or what?

The discussion didn't come to a solid conclusion, but the two possibilities mentioned were that either the unit was extensively rebuilt after a wreck (which didn't seem that likely because of the differences in the paint jobs), or that CSX renumbered a bunch of GP40-2s, so the first image is really a different unit. I _think_ this is an unusual example - both your photo and Craig's are very recent, but I seem to recall seeing numbers in that font before, maybe once or twice. I figured it was a case of a smaller shop doing a quick numbered or repainting job and using a non-standard stencil or decal. Hopefully over the next couple months, we can look around to see if more units show up with this type of number. I guess we should look at the repainted Conrail units to see if they're using this new font on a regular basis. ------------------ Dave Railfanning & modeling modern CSX The MARC Railfan and Modeler Site
Dave, I hadn't been to the diesel modelers list, but I thought the font was too weird to pass up. [I should've know Craig would have already spotted it... he doesn't miss a thing!]. The unit has been floating around the Raleigh/Durham, N.C. area for the past couple of weeks. The picture I took was on 10/11, in Durham, N.C. Geez, I hope this is not the "new" standard! I remember when units were being renumbered into the Seaboard Sytem; most units were not repainted and were hastily renumbered with whatever decals were available. It made for very interesting sights, however, I don't remember any repainted units receiving non-standard styles. Chessie ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors!
