Greetings all. I am a new member from Yuma, Arizona. I am a Marine, have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. I have a wife and 5 kids. I have been interested in the hobby since my early teen years and have followed it for many years, I am now 25. Its been a very long time, and yet, I have never had the ability to start a layout. During my teen years other things seemed to take priority, cars, girls, that kind of thing, so the money never panned out due to paying for the before mentioned things. I am an avid drag racer, but have recently had to get out of the hobby due to a number of circumstances with my wife and childrens health not going in the best directions. I have finally convinced my wife that this hobby is one that will keep me in the house and will not cost near as much as car parts. She always hated that a majority of my day after work consisted of me being in the garage under the hood of my car. Plus when I threw in the idea that the kids could help me out it kind of sold her on the idea of me building a layout, because once again, working on a car is no place for kids under 7 years old lol. Well, that about sums myself up. I hope to be an avid member and will be posting what I want to build here pretty soon. Oh, I am going to be using primarily N scale due to a limited amount of space and wanting to build as much as possible in that small space. Z scale is just too small, my two youngest boys would end up eating the trains, cant have that now can we.
Welcome to TrainBoard! Please share your progress with us. When you have a layout plan, perhaps a few photos as construction goes along etc.
I submitted my layout plan in the layout area. It is titled New N-Scale Layout : Mountain Based. I cant wait to start working on this project. I have already started building the mock miniature version just to make sure everything fits.
glad to see another Arizonian! As for kids and cars, I was handing my dad wrenches by 5 and helping to drop in engines by 7
Well my oldest are 7 and girls. Mom has them in they are supposed to be clean freaks and not get dirty. My oldest son is 6 and not very far behind my 2 daughters on the girly range for whatever reason. My 3 year old, he has tried helping but most of the time he ends up side-tracked or drinking fluids not regularly ingested. My youngest is 1, so he is just outta the question. This is a hobby they can all help with and enjoy. Believe me though, I miss my car and working on it, but family must come first. I am in Yuma, not that far away.
I only have girls....a few years ago, my now 14 yearold said that a "barn fresh" 289 Cobra was a peice of junk....
Forgive them father, for they know not what they say... And welcome aboard (not to mention, thank you for your service to this country!). I've got 4 kids and also used to be into cars (mostly my old Checker Cab) but rarely get to work on it. Just got back into trains after a 15-year hiatus and am having a blast. I'm sure you'll find some great information and help here.
Welcome aboard and thank you for your service to country. I look forward to seeing and hearing about your progress.
