I need to do a river (6" x 3') and a stream (1" x 3'). I have 2 1/2 bags of EZ Water. My water need not be very deep as I am modeling Western rivers in the summer. I'm not sure how much of the EZ Water it takes for coverage. My river is open at each end. Not sure exactly how to handle this. Thanks for any thoughts. Jim
I have used this years ago and it is a good product. But a word of caution. Since the stuff has to be heated it does't do very well around any plastic structures like bridge piers etc. I had some plastic docks that the heat warped. I will be doing some extensive water in the future and I will most likely go with Modge Podge gloss.
I did a 34" x 8" x 1/4" river module using Deep Pour Water. Here's the construction thread: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=41271.msg535934#msg535934 I'm super happy with the results, the first attempt using Michaels' CastinCraft was a disaster. Woodland Scenics has a calculator that converts ounces of product to dimensions: https://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/page/wc0
I used this over a large area (stream and water body near lumber mill) when I originally created the layout I was not aware of the heat concern. The pour turned out fine and is pliable (can be worked after pour with heat gun) but I had 2 areas my lower foam that was damaged, it was an easy enough repair but a word of awareness using the product. They actually warn you of this upfront had I purchased the product in advance Here are a few pics after the pour, river with a rapid waterfall to the main water feature around mill and around the back side water can empty out. After Woodland Scenics C1206 E-Z Water I did some touch up with the: Woodland Scenics C1212 Water Effects Woodland Scenics CW4515 Surface Water, Water Ripples Woodland Scenics CW4516 Surface Water, Water Waves
I was going to suggest Real Water but based on the above pictures this Deep Water stuff does look good. As for having the ends of your rivers open, a simple solution is to attach a "block" to the fascia either end of the rivers. While it might be a little exxy you could buy a small piece of styrene and cut it to fully cover either end of the rivers. Only word of caution I would add is for you to watch the drying process of the Deep Water and remove whatever you use BEFORE the water fully dries.
I made the 3' long 'dam' about an inch high across the river on my module with some aluminum flashing tacked into the plywood edge. Sealed the face with clear saran wrap, and sealed the edges with silicone sealant. Once everything hardened up, the rest came off clean, including the silicone sealant, pulled right off the edge. The Deep Water did get exothermic, not enough to melt anything, but aluminum was a good idea for sure.
do NOT use styrene or wood as your dam!...use saran wrap, or better, visalean (thin plastic drop cloth), held in place by wood blocks or styrene... Deep pour water will adhere to wood or styrene.
