Hay everybody. I need some help tracking down some Louisville & Nashville equipment. Specifically I’m looking for a steam era caboose and some passenger cars.

I have seen ads for Con-Cors L&N heavy weights, but no pictures, does anyone have then or have seen them and can comment on their detail. How do then compare to say the spectrum heavy weights?

How about the branchline Kits? Any good?

And about the steam era caboose, does anyone know of any manufacturer who makes them??

Imp asking because I just got a Spectrum light-mountain in L&N on e-bay, and would like some passenger cars to go with it and a caboose for when I’m in a freight mood.

    Thanks

The Brancline kits are great! I would suggest getting a few. I am. Walthers and Atlas have steam era cabooses but non in L&N yet.

Atlas' comes in undecorated and is a non-wide vision off center cupola that would fit your era.

Eastern Car works has a "Northeast Standard" for $20.00

Roundhouse makes 3 styles of cabooses.

You might try the L&N Historical society. I think Rick Ridout of Rix and Pike Stuff has something to do with that. He has a nice L&N layout.

Con-Cor's L&N passenger cars are still listed in the Walthers Cat. but these are the smoothies.

IHC lists the heavyweight L&N set 8 cars $79.84 pg 134.

    That's all I could find.

    Dave,

The Branchline coaches are quite nice -- I've built a few myself -- although I'm no expert they certainly "look" like an L&N coach to me. As far as the sleepers go, the one's Branchline is offering in Pullman Pool colors as well as any in L&N will be a very close to exact match to the real cars.

There are a few possibilities for a "stand in" L&N caboose -- their wood steam era cabooses really came in two styles, with the descriptive and somewhat colorful nicknames "Big Woody" and "Little Woody." The "Little" Woodies were far more common than the longer cars.

Blue Ridge Historics made a resin kit for both of these cars several years ago. They are some of the easiest resin cabooses to build out there.

For a photo of my good friend Bill Welch's model built from this kit of the Little Woody see the Steam Era Freight Car site:

For a photo of Bill's model of the "Big Woody" (these were converted from boxcars, by the way) see:

    hope this helps,

    Marty
