Hi all, I just installed 2 DN163A1 in two atlas SD-50’s. I would like to program the lights so that the head lights dim when the loco is in reverse. I went onto the Digitrazx website and took a look at the instructions/specifications section for this decoder. It talks a lot about Hex numbers, which I am assuming is something specific to the Digitrax decoders/command stations. I am using an NCE PowerCab, and need some Hex to NCE translating. I think I have figured it out, could someone please check me.

    From the Digitrax Web Site...

    http://www.digitrax.com/v1/fx3.htm#fx3effectstable

If you scroll down to the section where it refers to “CVs that affect specific FX3 outputs:”

There is a table that lists some Functions, CV & Hex# and the effect generated. If I read this table right, I need to set CV#49 to a value of 104 to get the headlight to dim in reverse. Do I have it right?

P.S., the dimming of the headlight while in reverse, is this Rule #17???

P.s.s., this is the last DCC question for a while, I promise !!:teeth:

Hex numbering is just a different way of expressing a number (hex is base 16, whereas decimal is base 10 - If we'd been born with eight fingers on each hand, we'd have problems with decimal). Hex is easily related to binary (base 2 - the native language of electronics) as 16 is a power of two. Digitrax has used it in the past as digits are easily translated to the actual bits used to control features. This confuses most "normal" folk, thus the alternate decimal notation is usually given to save us the trouble.

As far as your headlight dimming, you have it right. CV49 controls the FX3 action of the F0F front headlight and a value of decimal 104 will set up dimming in reverse (Rule 17) operation.
