I have a design for my basement and a main line oval figured out (I think). My problem is I know some industry I want for operation but I have been told that I need the foot print for them first. Well some I want to scratch build and some I may buy and build but even getting a foot print of something like Walthers Cornerstone Series it only gives you a foot print. I am stuck with trying to figure this before I can even think about benchwork.

    Scooter,

Welcome to Train Board! You'll find a lot of people here more than happy to answer all your questions!

If you look in a current Walthers catalog, you'll find that almost every kit gives dimensions to help you plan your layout space. That will help for kitbuilt structures. For scratchbuilt structures, I'd just leave space and fill it in later.

If you leave more than enough room, great! You've got a place for all those neat details you can find in your LHS! If you find your building is too big for the space, then you've got some more work to do. Usually, you can use a part building that's not too deep, sometimes called a false front, especially if it's against the backdrop. You can also look at similiar structures in the Walthers catalog, and plan on leaving a little more space. If it's a downtown scene, it's not too hard to fill. Industrial spaces can be more open.

    Does this help?

Hi Scooter, welcome aboard! I am at the stage on my new layout where I need to fit in industries and other structures. I do have some buildings, and some kits ready for building, but I will also scratchbuild/kitbash some. If you have any irregular spaces to fill, it is a good opportunity to build a wedge-shaped building, they look great!

If you have any more questions, ask away, there are some accomplished folk here who will be happy to help [IMG]

i agree with Pat. Get the dimensions for your industries. Visit your LHS if u can't get off the internet. Then build mockups out of cereal or chip boxes , card stock or cardboard boxes. The mockups will help when kitbashing too.
