I wanted a Regional and Free-lanced Railroad set in the mid 1960's. I wanted to haul a variety of freight but also haul lots of coal, so I created my railroad to be a 6-state rail system Called the Chicago, Pittsburgh and eastern.

The catch is, my railroad never actually reaches Chicago, except by trackage rights over the Nickle Plate and Pennsylvania.

In imagination only, my railroad runs on it's own rail from Indianapolis, thru Southern Ohio, Central West Virginia and up towards Philidelphia, with a connection into New York.

Headquarters will be in Pittsburgh, hence the name. Most of what I will model will be steel mills in Pittsburgh area and Coal Mines in central West Virginia and Chemical Plants along the Ohio River.

The 6 states are (in random order): West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Virginia and Maryland.

The origional name was the Appalachian and Atlantic but it just didn't seem "real" enough and was supposedly modern.........I later discovered the beauty of diesels in the 1960's and the huge variety of rolling stock available.

I renamed the A&A to the CP&E, adopted an official paint scheme that was inspried by the N&W and SCL.

Right now all I have is 9 feet of branchline through a small central West Virginia town called Shelf. (Since there is a small ledge that hangs over the row of houses on Railroad Avenue, the only paved street in town. The mine and a distributor is in the same town, supplying employment for the citizens of Shelf.
There is also an interchange with an out of service branch line of the Coal and Coke Railroad (one actually existed but was absorbed by the B&O in the late 40's/ early 50's)

Alan McClleland has his Virginian and Ohio, and I have my Chicago, Pittsburgh and Eastern. [IMG]

Thanks! I have wondered for a long time on that one. I figured I'd find out sooner or later [IMG]

Naming my railroad the JJJ&E was an easy decision. All four grand daughters enjoy running the throttle when they visit. ;)

Stay cool and run steam on the JJJ&E... [IMG]

Phil Brooks from the Atlas board drew this one up for me with "apologies to Rio Grande". I haven't done anything with it yet, but I like it.

I haven't put a lot into graphics, but in my mind I've got a pretty good story line. The Arizona Central will be the parent co. that also handles passenger service interchanging with Santa Fe in norhtern Az, as well as the Grand Canyon Railway conection (yes, I found a way to run steam in a modern age).
Freight will be handled by as many AZ shortlines I can do road power for, as well as my own line.

Looks great! Will the overall paint scheme will be similar to that which we saw in the 1980's or so? Colors and design?

The basis of naming my road should be obvious to all. Building the Triple L never ceases to amaze me.

Looking for a name for my model railroad and for the name of the big city I wanted to model. My favorite prototype is Santa Fe from the time I got my Lionel warbonnet streamliner set in 1950-something. The Lionel catalog had an artist's painting of the train going through what looked like Monument Valley. Romanticized Southwest. Southwest. A mission station like Albuquerque or San Diego or like SP's in San Antonio. So many Santa Fe stations and towns had names in Spanish with some kind of a religious connotation. Santa Fe = holy faith. San Diego = Saint James. Santa Cruz = holy cross. And so on. I thought of a real Santa Fe town in California-- Victorville in the desert. And that reminded me of Vacaville, where there was some kind of prison disturbance. And the name Santa Vaca came. It means Sacred Cow, or Saint Cow, or Holy Cow!

My layout is a mostly-ficticious subsidiary of the Santa Fe system, the Santa Vaca & Santa Fe. Herald:

My railroading got started with a train around the Christmas tree, and after a while, I thought of a way the name Santa Vaca relates to Christmas. I will tell you in advance it is entirely made up.

    The Legend of Santa Vaca

In one of the early Spanish missions established in Texas to convert the Indians, a priest was telling his congregation they should give to the church even though they didn't have much to give. He said that God can use our gifts more than we know, and he told the story of the cow who gave up her feeding stall to make a place for the Baby Jesus to lay. He said the cow's gift-- the manger-- became more a part of the Christmas scene than even the expensive gifts of the Wise Men.
But the Indians confused the cow in the priest's Christmas story with a buffalo cow who was worshipped in their pre-Christian native religion and they began to bring back the cult of the Holy Cow. The Church tried to discourage the practice but could not stop it entirely. The village near the mission took on the name Santa Vaca, and it grew into a major city served by a subsidiary of the Santa Fe Railway.
At the cathedral in Santa Vaca near where the mission once stood is a stained glass window with the manger scene featuring the Baby Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the Holy Cow, each with a halo.

I haven't built the city scene or the cathedral yet but I created art for the stained glass window and used it for a "company Christmas card" for my imaginary railroad.

I haven't built my big dream railroad, only a short piece of a secondary mainline through a courthouse square town in the piney woods of East Texas.

The town is named Johnston, Texas after a model railroad buddy who died in 1973.

Centerpiece of the Johnston small town scene on my East Texas layout is the WAYNE COUNTY COURTHOUSE on the courthouse square. Most counties in Texas are named for famous Texas heroes: early settlers or soliders in the Texas Revolution. For my ficticious Texas county, I figured I needed a ficticious Texas hero. It's named for John Wayne.

A logging line connects at Johnston-- the Johnston and East Texas RR, reporting marks JET. Sounds faster than it runs!

Such creativity. I dunno, my layout is a huge time consuming experiment for me. I'm sticking with "The Hulk".

As my layout progressed, I saw the need to be able to name buildings, etc for reference. Was up late one night thinking about local areas, went upstairs for the phone book and happened to see a book I have detailing the Andy Griffith Show.

Looking thru that book, I saw many of the locations I needed, Mayberry, Bixby, Mt. Pilot, Ruby Creek. Checked for lumber company, furniture factory, etc. and they were almost all there.

What wasn't already there, I looked thru the episode summaries to find the rest. Needed the name for the local rock & gravel pit. There could only be one.... Ernest T. Bass Rock & Gravel.

Needed a name for the brewery.... not a more famous "imbiber" than Otis Campbell, Mayberry's infamous drunk.

Other buildings I used from the show, Walker's Drugstore, (Ben) Weaver's Department Store, Mayberry Security Bank, Mayberry Hotel, Floyd's Barber Shop, Foley's Meats.

The lumber company was named after Mr. McBeeVee. He was actually a lineman in one episode. Opie was telling about this friend he met in the woods. He walked in the trees, wore a shiny hat and made smoke come out his ears. Andy and Barney thought this was an imaginary friend, but no.

Then of course, the is the all-time favorite Miracle Salve Company.

Have not found a location for the Aunt Bee's Kerosene Pickle Factory, yet.

    Wolfgang,

That is one nice layout. I have the same passenger station, and mine is no where near as good. Also like the Duff Beer and Kwik-E-Mart.

Overall - Excellent or should I say "Egggg-cell-lent"

My layout is named after my fictional shortline. The Deanne & Anthony (made from the wife and my middle names). Fictional towns and road based in the 4 state area(MO-KS-AR-OK). Same region friscobob's layout runs. Most of the industries are or were in the area. Names of businesses, landmarks, etc. are based off of family members, both for fun, and some for trying to interest her i.e. increase her tolerance level. Some of my favorites include Rudd recycling, Burkey Bottom Creek, Mossy Springs, and McCausley Lead Mining.....
