Are there any kits of a roadside rest area (picnic tables/shelter/public restroom)? I remember these from several x-country trips on Rt. 66 as a wee cub in the early '50's. The only thing I have found so far is a paper model of a side by men's and women's public restroom on ebay, no longer available. Thanks!
Woodland Scenics has the picnic tables. https://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/item/A2214 I have also seen laser cut picnic tables, but I am not sure who makes them. There are several small building kits that could be modified to make the public restroom, although Noch makes an outhouse kit if you want primitive. https://www.walthers.com/outhouse-2-c4546d?ref=1 You might want to check out a station platform kit such as this Atlas one for your shelter. https://shop.atlasrr.com/p-1102-n-station-platform-kit.aspx Noch also has a Roadside Resting Place, but it is special order only. https://www.walthers.com/resting-place-102e06?ref=1 Carter
I would like to build something like that also, but nobody makes American vehicles from the '60s-'70s. And I'm NOT talking about trucks. Grandma did not drive a cement mixer to go pick up a loaf of bread !!!
There were North American prototype N scale vehicles (automobiles) manufactured in the 1960s and 1970s, but they are mostly out of production, and you will need to find them in "used' condition. They will also need a bit of work to bring them up to today's standards, but this hobby is about modeling. The links below are to automobiles that were seen on North American roads, and include both domestic and imported models. 1960s era: http://nscalevehicles.org/resources/era_1960-1969.php 1970s era: http://nscalevehicles.org/resources/era_1970-1979.php The lists were put together about 5 years of so ago, so there may be a few more to choose from. Some that come to mind are the soon to be released Classic Metal Works 1974 Buick Estate Wagons. https://www.walthers.com/74-buick-wagon-gold-mist https://www.walthers.com/74-buick-wagon-green-d9bcec https://www.walthers.com/74-buick-wagon-burgundy-917d6c Also, these lists did not include any kits. Another option is to use some of the TomyTec cars as stand-ins for 1:160 North American cars. For example, TomyTec makes a Nissan Gloria that is very similar to a 1966 Mercury Comet. CMW 1967 Ford and TomyTec Nissan Gloria Wiking Chevelle, TomyTec Cedric and TomyTec Gloria I am hoping we will eventually see more N scale automobiles for all eras, but for now we have to be creative and use what is available. There is a vendor on e-bay "dcollins19" that is selling a "Public Restroom" kit that would fit right in with what you are modeling. He also has concrete benches and tables.
Is this an Eastern rest area or a Western one? The Eastern ones have gas stations and a building with restaurants/restrooms inside. The Western ones are more spartan with a small park/picnic area and a building with restrooms and maybe an area with vending machines. But they're usually in a very scenic area.
