I need to start modeling some glacially smoothed granite in the near future. The rock I am trying to model is typically very smooth and rounded with some cracking in it. It isn't the kind of stuff you normally see molds for.

Has anyone tried this or can someone direct me to a publication or website with information on this?

I use the extruded pink foam board. 2" thick size. I cut it with my fillet knife until I am satisfied with the shape. Then use a Surform tool to round the edges I want rounded. I use an Xacto knife for making the cracks. Then I paint it with acrylic paints. When the paint is tacky, and almost dry, I spray it with a wash of India ink and alcohol. Seems to work for me.

Here's a thought, go to a large craft store and look at "fau" (SP?)finishes that are used to make wood look like rock. I've seen the use of fau marble finishes that look exactly like real marble.

Or... go to Home Depot or Lowes, build a rapport with one of the kitchen counter installers and try and get some scraps of kitchen counters they make and install. The latest 'yuppy' kitchen counters are granite and or marble.
(the rapport thing is not as hard as you think. I get lots of help and stuff just by saying; this is not for building a kitchen, I play with electric trains and am building a layout in my basement.... you'd be surprised how helpful people become, some even ask if they can come and see it.)

    Good Luck
