I use large a mounts of Microscale decals, and the many hundreds of sheets I have used in the past have been fine. Recently the decals appear to have changed, they are thinner and MUCH more delicate, some almost impossible to apply without damage.

Also the old decals were excellent when applied over uneven surfaces when decal setting solution is used, but the new ones will sometimes not conform to the surface irregularities despite several applications of solution.

It appears that the method of producing the decals has changed, making them much less easy to apply. has anyone else noticed the difference?

I use N scale decals, but I assume the same applies to other scales.

    Alan,
This is contrary. I think you may have gotten a bunch of the older Microscale decals! As years ago, I used an excessive amount myself of both Champ and Microscale, however the old Microscale decals were like this! So, I fled to using Champ decals, however the newer decals I've gotten from Microscale are very easy applied without problems. Not saying they did change the decals again, (being its possible) but the new decals I've gotten are very easyily applied to any surface without trouble.

OR, you got an aged set, which will be brittle, an not want to conform. I still like my Champion Decals, even though they are now done printing decals, but aren't out of business.....

Makes me wonder whats up with Microscale, very interesting!

Alan, I just got a set of Micro scale decales for a Jordan spreader I built for the C&NW. The decals I recieved seemed to work OK. Maybe it was just a bad run!!

The decals I am having problems with are brand new runs. I emailed Microscale last night, and have a reply this morning, asking which particular sheets I am having problems with, so maybe things will be explained [IMG]

    Alan,
please for all of post their reply! I'd like to hear it! As I use alot of Microscale decals, which is a switch for me. I normally use Chapion Decals, an have to use the Microscale Decals being I'm doing some modern modeling in CSX so. Which Champ doesn't offer....

I've come to believe that Microscale Decals have a poor "shelf-life". I used to buy them from a local model RR warehouse, and had those same type of problems, especially the practically falling apart in your hands problem. Since I started buying them direct, I haven't had any problems with them at all. Maybe the ones you received Alan were "in inventory" for awhile. Hopefully they will exchange them for you.

I don't think these were old decals, as they were out of print for some time, then they finally did another run, and they are in the new style packets.

I have some old decals which I have had around for ages, and they are a dream to apply

I will post any reply/explanation I get from microscale.

One trick I was taught in dealing with Microscale decals- spray a little Floquil Dullcote (not much, just a little) over the decal sheet, then let it dry. This should add a little more strength to the decals.

I tried it, with some success, in saving old decals. It may work for you (standard warning: your mileage may vary)) ;)
