Greetings all.

    I was doing some research for painting my N-guage SD50f and found this photo, thanks to NiagaraRails and being new to CN locos and North American Railways in general.. I got confused [IMG]

    I am trying to identufy the loco at the rear of the photo, behind the SD50f 5445, as it seemed to me the positiioning of the number boards didn't tie in with what I was expecting.

    Is it an SD70? I tried all combinations of looking for the number on NiagaraRails, but only drew a blank.

    Thanks in advance for any help.

    Regards

    The number looks to be 6255, which makes it an IC SD40-2. Here is a pic from George Elwood's site

    IC SD40-2 6255

    Looks like what you have is an SD 50 F "Draper Taper" Full width hood with tapered section leading in to the rear cab doors. The full hood is for ease of servicing in cold weather and the taper is for better visability and access to the rear of the cab from outside.
    Hope this helps

    Thanks for the info.... ermmm follow up question... Do IC locos stay mainly within the IC network, or now that they are part of the "organisation" can they be seen anywhere on the network?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Harold [IMG]

    Oddly enough, I think this answered my question, seeing as how it too has the IC marks on the cab, and I saw one of these a couple of weeks ago as I was hammering down the 407 to the 401 heading back to Waterloo from Toronto (did a double take then).. this kind of proves that locos with IC markings, do get to most areas [IMG]

    OK, so now I need one of these as well...

    Pardon my ignorance, but is there an N-gauge model for these at all in this form.. Livery I dont mind, I can repaint and I am sure someone does transfers for it, it's does the base model that is correct exist in any livery (Why do I have this fear someones going to say "yes, but only Bachmann" ?? :( )

    Regards

    What is/was the heritage of that blue engine? Must have been ex-Conrail?

    </font>
They were painted Conrail blue but were actually part of the LMS lease fleetl. They spent half the year running on Conrail and the other half on CN. When Conrail was split up the Dash-8 units were split 3 ways between CN, NS and CSX.

    There are also Alstom SD40s in grey that have a similar patch scheme and are working on the IC.

    Thanks Lenny. Sounds like their use was a rather involved process. I didn't know that Conrail had such friendly connections with CN.

    Well, that appears to be a C40-8 and Bachmann is the only company I'm aware of that makes a C40-8. (or is it Dash 8 40c? I can never remember)

    In Either case, in N scale, that is your best bet right now.

    </font>
Yep, there is no current "great" C40-8 model.... hopefully one will come soon! I think the kitbashers would use a Kato C44 chassis as the basis, but I don't know offhand if the dimensions are the same.... I think Atlas has announced a C40-8 in HO ( or Dash8-40C) so hopefully it will make its way down to N scale [ most HO items do]

    That's my 2 cents.....
