How do you go about building your layout? My efforts on the M.A.T. are in the third year now and I don't feel I have made as much progress as I would like to. My approach has been haphazard to say the least. I seem to go in phases. Wiring, track laying, scenery and structures. I try to get something done each day but don't always get to it. Most of all though, it is fun and relaxing. Some years ago, I built a sailboat. It took me a year to complete it but I followed a disciplned regime which wasn't always fun but the end result was satisfying. Should I do the same to complete the M.A.T.? [IMG] but then I think maybe I don't ever really want to finish it, just keep going and adding and whatnot.
It may help me to hear what your approaches are.

As my modeling friends will attest to, if it needs to be done for a public display, I work on it till it's done and hopefully done right. [IMG] But stuff for me personally, I go at my own pace. If it gets done, it gets done. If it doesn't, there's always tomorrow...

Dont be unhappy for that Robin. Look at me. I´m on my year 12 of my SR&WF, and I think that the layout will never be really finished. I work similar to you and it works for me and IT IS FUN. For the moment I´m stuck with the surroundings on the new extension - the hump yard - but i´m sure I will find a way out soon. When it goes slow I can always got to TrainBoard or all my fellow modellers sites to get inspiration. Remember that you have got me into the Trainboard, thank you.

  4. Well, it IS supposed to be fun isn't it. Gee, in 17 years, I haven't made as much progress either as I would like. It seems that I keep tearing things out and rebuilding them ot replacing them with something new.

Right now, I have so much stuff going on that I can't get back to my grain elevator project and then to my switch machine project and then to my LED project and my Tortoise machine project and rebuilding Westport and...

Well, you get the idea. :)

    Robin,
Take heart. As long as you get relaxation and fun from your layout, who cares how far along it is [IMG]?? Fact is that the best layouts are NEVER done! We all like to think about the day when the layout is perfect and all we have left is operation. Take it from me, I "finished" my first layout (in 3 years time) and as soon as I started regular operating sessions I began to notice things like "if I moved that tree I could put a junk yard there" or "another switch here and I could service those two buildings" [IMG]. So it goes! Good luck and Happy Modeling!!
