I know the NS is short on power (and running off every available pool power hour), but here is a link to a picture of a KCS unit running through on NS today (unit 3 of 4 in this consist) in Durham, N.C. (at about 40 mph!) http://www.trainweb.org/ncrail/images/KCS.jpg Chessie

Isn't the EMD/KCS designation for their early SD50 testbed units SD40X? I remember Norfolk & Western got early SD50's built on SD40-2 frames and designated SD50S, and I remember seeing KCS's four units, 700-703, being called SD40X. Nice pic, those are some interesting looking units. ------------------ Have A Nice Day!
No sightglass, odd engine compartment top, different DB setup... And it looks shorter too. It'd probably be an interesting kitbash.

I checked in my back issues of Diesel Era; they ran an article on KCS in v2#2 (March/April 1991). It states that the units were built in 9/79 as SD40X's. The article also stated that # 700 & 701 were equipped as RC masters; # 702 & 703 were RC "slaves" Chessie
I tried to view the photo but it would not work , I always liked KCS power , I like the way they look .

I need to dig it up.... Harold
