Can anyone tell me how well these new locos from KATO run. I have two of the Life like version in ATSF and have yet to convert them to DCC. I know the KATO units will probably convert easily while the LL units are older and will be more difficult. Has anyone converted a LL unit and if so was it very difficult. The LL units run well and I know they were a lot cheaper than the KATO units.
    Thanks for the help

Just got the ATS&F E8's they run very well and look great!I've always liked Kato but the LL units are getting there.I'm not into dcc so I don't know how it will affect them.I will alway's recommend Kato they have been a consistantly good product for years.

The Kato E8/9 uses the DN-145K plug and play decoder from Digitrax. Just replace the light board with this decoder and now your loco is DCC. You will have to assign a new address though. Plus, the Kato engines just run smoother.

    Bryan,
I have not sampled the latest offerings from Kato, but did buy a first run of their E-8's ('93 or '95) and can tell you that they were genuine workhorses! Even though I bought my LL E-8's much cheaper, they were not nearly as smooth or detailed as the Kato units (if you can imagine that!). Plus, as someone has already posted, the Kato units are PnP for DCC!

Thanks everyone! I think I will probably try to get a pair of the KATO units. Is anyone interested in a pair of LL units? 35.00 a piece or 65.00 for both. E-mail me with serious inquiries.
    Thanks again

Well, I answered the question myself. I went to my local hobbyshop and compared the KATO E-8 vs the LL E-6. Needless to say I put a pair of the E-8s on layaway. And started to try to find a buyer for my LL units.
