Don, I don’t know if you misunderstood or it was just a typo but running engines with coreless motors on DC is fine. Nightmare03 warned us about running them on DCC layouts using the zero loco address. That’s what will kill the motor over time. If you are running them on DC you should have no worries.

    country Joe,

OK that clears it up. Thanks!
I didn't want my 844 and Big Boy to live on a shelf.

They are much too nice to be shelf queens. The joy is in running them.

I did some digging and found the P42 motor only part number. X037-2193. When I was there Kato used to sell just the motor assembly. IIRC they were $25 apiece. With the new parts store, it appears a lot of previously listed parts arn't in the new online parts catalog but probably still exist.

It might be worth contacting Kato USA to see if they have just the motor assembly.

    I hope this helps!

You misunderstand what is being pointed out here:

Coreless motors are great. Low current draw, smooth low speed operation, etc. That said, do not run them on DCC without a decoder attached to them in 00 mode on a DCC system as this causes them to fail. Have them in a properly DCC converted locomotive and you will not have any problems.

    And to add to clarity-
1- Coreless Motors on DC- Wonderful
2- Coreless Motors on DCC with Decoder- Wonderful
3- Coreless Moros on DCC withOUT Decoder- Not Good, Not Wonderful. Don't do it!

Coreless motors have been around for awhile. It's starting to trickle in to MRR.

And the manufacturers decide what kind of motors go into the locos they make. You just have to be aware so you know what to feed them to get them running. :)

You do realize that the HO P42 that uses these motors has been out for over a decade now (along with the HO Japanese release EF510), and the FEF3's with coreless motors are coming up on 9 years or so since they were released? There are thousands of each of those out there.

How much time is sufficent to flesh out technology?

    Enjoy!
