since I am a rookie at railfanning and so far have been loving it. Was curious about if there was a way that you can get a schedule for when trains go through a certain area or is it just hit & miss with a scanner while waiting at a spot......

Trains are very much on schedules and I know the D&H Railfans keep close tabs on where each train is and what's happening with each all the time. If you have interest in becoming a D&H Railfan I can help you get in touch with them. Many of the current D&H images on my site are from those people and I have allot of historical info you might enjoy as well.

I personally prefer to choose a spot and just sit for the day. For instance, a couple weekends ago, I took a trip out to Tehachapi and just sat on the little rock outcropping next to Walong with my book and some water and waited. It was a comfy spot and the trains are hard to miss. I could shoot the trains moving up the loop from the spot I was sitting in.

If you can get your hands on a recent timetable for your area, that would be your besst clue as to what is running and when...
