John, I scanned the first page of the old Train Shed Cyclopedia article on the EM-1, and without paying any attention, sent it to you. It took over 1/2 hour to send, and I was panicking. Anyway, since you are with hotmail, I got back the Undeliverable message because it "exceeded your allotment". I'm glad. Anyway, haven't heard from jGregg Publishers. If I don't in the next couple of days I'll do the Xerox thing. That file was like 5 megs, way too big. :(

Fitz, when you scan a page like that, try setting your scanner on BLACK & WHITE PHOTO, then click on the BORDER and slide it in closer to the printing all the way around. Then click on the PIXELS and set the width to 450 to 600 per inch. (The height is automatic).
Then save it to whatever folder you wish naming it as you wish in .jpg file type. THEN when the RESOLUTION SCALE comes up, slide the marker back down to just below the halfway marks, then SAVE it there.

That will give you a photo that will printout about a full page size so can be easily read.

You may need to play with the settings a bit to achieve the same thing, and can enlarge it or shrink it at will.

My guess is that you scanned it at full 100% at 1248 or more pixels per inch and at full 100% resolution as if you were intending to print it out like a KODAC photograph to frame and hang on the wall. That is why such terrible quantity of KB, see? 75 is max KB for clear photos here for posting, and for emailing, and also for clear Black & White photos to print out in gray scale. (Black ink is cheaper than color inks).

Try it, you'll like it. :D

Thanks Watash. I originally had bad luck trying to scan printed pages unless I did it at higher than normal resolution. Lately I have been surprised at how readable they are at low resolution. I shrunk it and resaved as jpg and will send to John. BTW my friend, this same book has an article from the Jan. 1940 Railway Mechanical Engineer on your beloved SP AC-9's. Do you have that?

    Fitz,
I got the file, and its gig. Not in memory but the size of it litterally on screen! I got both slide bars one on the side and one on the bottom of my screen. But its very readable! I have Microsolfs, "picture It" program and is trying to shirnk it enough that I can print it out on one sheet or 2 sheets of paper.

On it though, Its the first time I seen anything on the B&O's EM-1's listed as "Yellowstones" I mean most times they're known enough by just saying "EM-1" so... But most books and leaflets etc have just "EM-1" and nothing about "Yellowstone" So. Very interesting though! THANKS Fitz!

    Fitz,
Also, I forgot to say Forgetfull me! Anyway, in that book of yours, does it have the Western Marylands Challenger? It would be Western Maryland class "M-2" and any other Western Maryland locomotives along with any I mean ANY B&O loco's besides the one you done sent me. I'd be interested in them! E-mail me if you get a chance to find anything on them! And if its not a problem I may still give you my home address and have you print them out and ship them to me for my records of my own local railroads in the days of steam....

    Clayton,
Nope your slightly mistaken... Yellowstone, Big Boy, Challenger, Hudson, Northern etc, are all part of the "Wyte System" of steam locomotive classification... Now on the other hand you had Niagra's which were "Northerns" named by New York Central, then you had "War Babies" which also were "Northerns" that were named by Southern Pacific, Then you had "Potomacs" Also Northerns, named by the Western Maryland.

You could get in C&O country and have "Chesapeakes" which were of U.S.R.A. design of the 2-8-8-2's. The larger U.S.R.A. locomotives (Mallets, and articulateds didn't get a name most of the time unless the railroad they were made for named them... heres a slight run down for the Wyte System of steam loco classification...

    0-4-0T."DockSide" steam switcher, -OO-
    0-6-0.....steam switch..................-OOO-
    0-8-0.....steam switcher...............-OOOO-
    0-10-0...steam switcher..............-OOOOO-

    2-6-0....."Mogul"...........................o-OOO
    2-6-2....."Prarie"...........................o-OOO-o
    4-6-0....."Ten Wheeler"................oo-OOO
    4-6-2....."Pacific"...........................oo-OOO-o
    4-6-4....."Hudson"........................oo-OOO-oo

    2-8-0....."Consolidation"..............o-OOOO
    2-8-2....."Mikado".........................o-OOOO-o
    2-8-4....."Berkshire".....................o-OOOO-oo
    4-8-4....."Northern".....................oo-OOOO-oo

    2-10-0..."Decapod"......................o-OOOOO
    2-10-2..."Santa Fe"......................o-OOOOO-o
    2-10-4..."Texas"...........................o-OOOOO-oo

    That the rigid frame loco's.

The next bunch are articulated and or true Mallet design. They each can differ between the wheel arangement depending on the railroad.

    0-6-6-0..Articulated switcher....-OOO-OOO-
    0-8-8-0..Articulated switcher...-OOOO-OOOO-

    2-6-6-0..Articulated USRA Loco.....o-OOO-OOO
    2-6-6-2..Articulated USRA Loco...o-OOO-OOO-o
    2-6-6-4..Articulated USRA Loco..o-OOO-OOO-oo
    4-6-6-4.."Challenger"..............oo-OOO-OOO-oo
    2-6-6-6.."Allegheny"...............o-OOO-OOO-ooo

    2-8-8-0..Articulated USRA Loco..o-OOOO-OOOO
    2-8-8-2..Articulated USRA Loco..o-OOOO-OOOO-o

    2-8-8-4.."Yellowstone"........o-OOOO-OOOO-oo
    4-8-8-2.."Cab Forwards".....oo-OOOO-OOOO-o
    4-8-8-4.."Big Boy"..............oo-OOOO-OOOO-oo

Those are the main articulated or Mallet designs listed by the "Wyte System" of steam loco classification.

Now then theirs also duplexes and triplexes. I'll do the best I can on them I know theirs not many, nor but one has a name.

    duplexes include:

    4-4-4-4..Rigid Frame dual cylinder..oo-OO-OO-oo
    6-4-4-6..Rigid Frame dual cylinder..ooo-OO-OO-ooo

Now for the triplexes they include:

    2-8-8-8-0.."Triplex".....o-OOOO-OOOO-OOOO
    2-8-8-8-2.."Matt Shay"..o-OOOO-OOOO-OOOO-o
    2-8-8-8-4.."Triplex"....o-OOOO-OOOO-OOOO-oo

I hope my lists come out as I have it typed... If not I'll see if I can make it right so its understandable....

Now guys, that I have listed what I have here if theirs ones I've missed feel free to fill them in. I know I don't have them all I didn't include the rare ones such as the 4-8-0, 2-6-4, etc... these weren't big common designs...

The only one you left out was the MOST powerful of all engines, but it was not a steamer either. (Maybe that is one to ask the girls?)

    (snicker-snicker) ;)

Watash, you have already repaid the favor with your great photos and explanation of the New York Central Hudson cab and controls! Besides, it is not necessary to reciprocate. I like to share the stuff I have. [IMG]
