I've done that for some N scale storefronts.

You'd be amazed how good it can look if you just take a digital camera, take a picture of a store like you're looking for (or find a shot online), then take the .JPG and resize it in Word, print high-resolution. Cut out with scissors and experiment with size and position. When you get what you want, print it on the matte photo paper like a picture and you've got it. I take the entire image and put it on the inside of the window glass. It was VERY effective in modern commercial buildings with all the window signs, promotions, etc. that would be impossible to make any other way; I've done several buildings in downtown Flagstaff and the NAPA store that way. Mount with a bit of rubber cement off the window area so if it fades you can simply reprint the image again and put it in the window.

It was kind of an 'AHA' moment when I realized that putting the image on the inside of the window looked far better than any interior I could model.

Here's what I mean, this worked really well. Particularly for all the signage on the inside of the glass, no other way to get that like this.
