Not sure if this is the correct location for this post so please move if necessary. Saw these in the Reno yard and was curious about the names on each car. I've seen these cars before but not close enough, or observant enough, to notice this. Each car seems to have a unique name on the doors, what is the significance of this? Are all their cars individually named like this?
Yes, Cryo-Trans had individual names for all of their 2,200 liquid CO2-cooled mechanical reefer cars. That was kind of their thing. But the operation was recently bought by Lineage Logistics so this tradition is quickly becoming a thing of the past. I have one of the N scale models made by Walthers and that one is named "Port of Rocks" (CRYX 1336).
Thank you Metro....Interesting practice that makes each car very unique and maybe even a little personal. I can see why the new owners would stop doing this. Would take more time and effort to manage than what most want to expend nowadays it seems.
A few short lines name their locos for some of their prominent people. Passenger cars often had names. I suppose it's a short hop to naming freight cars. Even 2200 of them. One could hear a trackside railfan cry out, "Oh, look! There's Ralph!"
Whoa, never noticed that before!! I'll have to look closer if I see one! We have dedicated container service here in the NW that rolls on UP tracks, usually Seattle to Portland. Each car has a name of the people involved with getting it started. Quite a few years ago, so hard to see the names now.
