I'm looking for some detail/replacment parts for the Atlas cupola caboose. I'm interested in picking some of these up, although the models leave a bit to be desired by today's standards. I see Gold Medal Models has a detail kit for the Model Power bay window caboose. Will this work on the Atlas caboose as well? What are some other options for detailing the Atlas models without having to repaint them? Thanks for the help!

If you do much more than changing smoke jacks, brake wheels and maybe railing, you will have to do some repainting. You may even have to paint handrails white or yellow, depending on the road.

If you change roofwalks and window frames, you are better off repainting the whole car rather than just the detail parts. Number size is one thing that model manufacturers and decal manufacturers can not agree on. In the same fashion, model manufacturers and paint manufacturers can not agree on tints, shades and what-ever-you-want-to-call-it.

It is amazing that guys who are supposed to know so little about colours, or are supposed to be so unable to differentiate between shades can do so when they are applied to their trains or their cars.

That typed, you can no doubt use the Gold Medal kits on the Atlas. You may have to modify a part here-and there, but they should work. I have used Gold Medal kits on items other than that for which they were intended with no ill effects.

The Gold Medal caboose detail for the Model Power will work fine for the Atlas. You can also use Micro-train caboose ladders and rails. If you use the Micro-train, I have found that they fit better if you remove the front overhag being carefull to leave the two tabs in place

Marty, Have you found a way to fix the Atlas NP cabooses... you know, move the ladders to the correct side and windows moved to correct places yet?

I have 8 of these NP 1000 Series cabooses that need to be fixed.

the windows take work. You have to fill in the existing windows. After you cut the 34' caboose you will have a window on the cut out piece on each side. I cut them out carefully and add them to the caboose. The ladders involve just turning the Gold Medal ladders around. The roofwalk has to be rebuilt. all takes some time, especially sanding off the rivits and scribbing the car to make it a wood caboose. fun tough!
