13 miles east of Great Falls, MT. I can take you to it, it's easy to find. It's north of Belt, MT. It's BNSF now. Enger Cutoff road goes right over the top at the west portal. That road is right off MT 200/US 87/US 89, out of GF. Here's a link to an aerial photo: Link Here's something a little further from home: Hermosa Tunnel's twin bores near the summit of Sherman Hill between Cheyenne & Laramie, WY:
I wonder what it's like in those houses on top? Does a train vibrate the dishes, and windows? mg: Boxcab E50
Prolly does, Ken! The trains no longer rattle dishes at this tunnel... Red Coulee Tunnel 6, Belt Creek, MT:
East end of Hermosa Tunnel. No trains at the time. Finally, an Eastbound Intermodal exits Hermosa Tunnel Another eastbound just about to enter west side of Hermosa Tunnel.
Thanks, Keith--that reminded me of my old stompin' grounds! Mullan Tunnel, with a westbound struggling upgrade:
West end of tunnel at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Bridge in front of tunnel crosses Potomac River. View of tunnel from across river View of coal cars passing through tunnel View of tunnel and Amtrak train Covered hopper entering tunnel
I doubt they are as prevelent as in the West, but they're not rare in the East, either. I love that BN nose sticking out of the tunnel.
HemiAdda, thank you for these pictures, a great source of inspiration for me. Though I've never been in the USA .... Wolfgang
The hillside is slowly winning the territory back that Belt Creek Tunnel 5 occupies, looking west thru number 5, over Belt Creek Trestle, and into Tunnel 6:
Thanks, Darren. I try to take foamer shots, stuff that woudl look cool with an actual train... I may go back this weekend, and hike it again; this time hike around, and get shots of the tunnels from outside the ROW...
While fisherman float by, GN Tunnel 1 sits idly in the shadows next to the Missouri River: This line has been out of service since a washout 4 years ago.
This unfinished tunnel was twice started around 1883, and the project was either a crooked operation or ran out of money. It was supposed to connect mines from Globe to the Altantic & Pacific RR in Flagstaff, AZ, by penetrating the Mogollon Rim, part of the Colorado Plateau. It is a couple hundred feet deep and a nice summer hike to reach it. There were never any tracks near here.
