I bought a Testors Model Master 3/0 brush for premium dollar, and it initially looked fine until the moment it hit the paint, at which time it "Blossomed" into a scraggly thissle bush of "Lame Hairs"! What a DOG! The fibers were initially dipped into some kind of Matte Medium, which must have held it together to make it look like the bristle was sharp, pointed, and would be a good brush for fine work. I relegated this brush to applying decal softening solution, as that's all it's good for. Well, all is not lost as I had an order of the FATT HANDLE brushes on order from Model Expo that I just tried today, that turn out to be the Absolute Best brushes I have ever used with Floquil paint. WOW, What Control! I could not belive how nice they are to use. You simply got to try these. Item #: YNB102 No affiliation with Model Expo, just they have the best prices on small tools and drill bits I have ever found.
These look very similar to the brushes I got at A. C. Moore (a craft store). Mine were in a set of 4. The fat, short handle is very comfortable and controlable, with a good flat blade. Just goes to show you don't have to spend a lot to get a good brush. I do most of my painting by hand or spray bomb, haven't got that air brush thing working yet.
I have a couple of fat handle brushes. But none for the smaller numbers. This set has me very tempted! Boxcab E50
They cost me $12 for the set. That one you got John, looks just like one from the set I got. I bet it's from the same mnufacturer. I like to brush paint everything except locomotives, which I airbrush. Ken, they sell the brushes ala carte too, so you don't have to buy a whole set, but I try to spent about $30-50 when I mail order to spread out the shiping hit. They have drill bits 10 for $1.99, and pin vises and dremel stuff cheap too. I order from them about once every couple years.
I have to chime in here... I use the Microbrush . GREAT for highlighting handrail ends on locos in N, steps, close quarters touchups, almost anything you can imagine. These things are super useful. Lacquer thinner cleans them for reuse, and doesn't degrade the brush integrity.
Robert- Called the local "hobby shop" today. It was an unrelated question. Decided to ask about these paint brushes. Well, guess what? He was just about to order from Model Expo!! So some time next week, I'll have this set of brushes! Boxcab E50
