Hello all This is a "vintage" Arnold steam engine that is precious to my heart (Christmas gift from my grand-father 40 years ago) One rod got loose.........not sure why/how Anyway, how should I attempt to fix it? Thanks
There's always hope. Were you running the loco on your layout when the event occurred? If so, that's where to start looking. Otherwise, there are places that have parts for old Arnold locomotives. Doug
Your locomotive is an Arnold Rapido Item 2271. I believe there were four locomotives in this series (2270 through 2273). Given that your missing part may be difficult to find, I think your best option is to search for a 2271 on eBay (or wherever). The 2270 and 2273 have red drive wheels and you need black. I'm not sure what Item 2272 has. You could also buy any of the series and try to extract the part you need, but if it's pressed in place, the work could be difficult. I know what it's like to treasure a broken locomotive. As a teen, I stupidly ruined my Rapido 0-6-0 when stripping its paint. Some 40+ years later, a friend sent me his, an exact match that runs as beautifully as mine once did. [The photo here is not mine; I do not own this locomotive.]
you are correct, it's #2271 - I might be lucky on Ebay with European sellers, but price will probably be crazy high !
Thanks for finding the model numbers, Dan. I tried last night but ran out of time. french-guy, here is the site that has Arnold parts but I don't know if they will have that part. There was another site I used a few years ago that had parts listed by loco number but I can't find it now. I'm sure I had it bookmarked and will keep looking. http://www.arnold-ersatzteile.de/ Arnold usually just had the valve gear pieces snapped into place and it looks like there is a hole there for the link to attach and swing back and forth. You can see the other places where they used similar split pins, like on the rods, to hold things together. The split pins are rather delicate and it's easy to break off one side of the split pin and that makes it useless, of course. That could be what happened to your piece and it fell out. Doug
I found the parts diagram and numbers for the 2270 series. I'm sure the valve gear parts are the same for all the series and I'm pretty sure the part in question is #0221-6R. Now, finding a source is the issue. http://www.arnold-ersatzteile.de/mediapool/60/605716/data/Eigene_Dateien_2/2270_Dampf_BR_78_211.pdf Doug
Thank you so much for doing such research.......but yes, I guess finding the part is going to be difficult Question (stupid one?) will it still work fine without the rod?
In the Nov/Dec N-Scale Magazine on page 55. The article "The Short and Nn3arrow" Photo 6 "westmodel Etched Nickel-silver valve gear and main/side rod kit for the Westmodel/Aspenmodel K-28." It seems there is replacement parts for Marklin Locos, maybe something can work for you.
Yes, you can pull the rod completely off by unsnapping it from where it attaches on the eccentric on the driving wheel. Just do it gently so the split pin doesn't break as I indicated above. I have done this on my 2215 BR-05 4-6-4 except it's the main rod because there were crosshead parts missing when I bought it. Doug
Here is the site I mentioned that lists parts by model. https://spur-n-teile.de/ I was thrown for a bit because it looks a little different than it did in 2019. Anyway, click at the upper left where it says "ERSATZTEILE NACH HERSTELLER" and a drop down will appear. Click on Arnold and it will go to a page listing the different models. We want the parts list for the Arnold BR-78 and if you scroll down, there are listings for the partial right and left side valve gear. It indicates these are defective and the right hand side one appears to show the eccentric rod connected directly to the crosshead guide which is not correct. The left side diagram, however, shows the eccentric rod connected to the piece you need, called a "Gegenkurbel" which means "eccentric crank" which is correct. You can see that it will pivot back and forth as the eccentric rod moves. To me, it looks like that part must be the same for both sides, unless I'm missing something, so it should work. You can write and tell them exactly what you need and I'm sure they will be able to help you. I found them to be very helpful when I was buying parts back then. I communicated with a gentleman named Daniel. EDIT: Curses on my terribly rusty German. I see now they say the part, as well as many others, isn't available right now but you could still write them to see what they can do. Doug
