This is to call your attention to two magazine articles. In the May issue of "Trains" is an excellent article on the Housatonid--some history and some good info on today's operations. In the May issue of "Model Railroader," an article on modeling the northern-most section of the Housatonic--from Caanon to Pittsfield. I find it interesting that both those articles should come out at the same time.
In those articles, do they by any chance give a specific date for: When was the HRR leased by the NYNH&H? When were HRR operations merged into the NYNH&H? I've perused several web sites. None gives an absolutely clear answer to either of my questions. Thanks! Boxcab E50
The magazines are at home and I am at work, so I can't give you a definite answer now, but I believe the "Trains" article may have included some of that information. I will check when I get home tonight. By-the-way, I see you are about to pass the 1000-post mark. Congratulations.
This is not a coincidence. Both mags are owned by Kalmbach, and the two articles are being run in unison for a reason. They are specifically targeted on the modern HARR, and I don't recall any date info in the MR article. I have yet to pick up the Trains copy (I subscribe to MR but not Trains) but I think it would have some history on it.
Peirce- Thanks for looking. I'd be happy to know if they have printed answers to my questions! I see that I am at the 1000 mark! Boxcab E50
There are several dates scattered within the "Trains" article. A couple I picked out, which may help answer your question are: "In 1892, Housatonic threw in the towel and allowed itself to be leased to the New Haven,..." Although they are less specific, it would appear the NH pretty well had total control by 1902.
Peirce- Sounds like they didn't get into much detailed history. But this does add something I can use in my notes. Thanks! Boxcab E50
I found this website on the Housatonic- it's unofficial, but very informative: Unofficial Housatonic RR Website Have a look. I did- looks good to me. It would make a great road to model, and not just necessarily with the trackplan MR has.
Bob- Somehow I missed your response on this. It is an excellent web site! I wish that other similar pages were so well done, and informative! Boxcab E50
