Well, the refinery is almost done. This picture was taken last week and since then the 5 main storage tanks have been finished along with all the remaining pipework. I will be posting here and up on my website all the processes that were involved in the construction and weathering (and yes, there is actually a refinery that looks this bad still in operation). Hopefull the picture will post, if not you can access it directly here: http://www.geocities.com/trainart/ref2.jpg [ 29 May 2001: Message edited by: Trainart ]
I get to your site OK from your name at the bottom. The link to the refinery picture doesn't work tonight May28 10:27 pm Hope you get it working as I am looking forward to seeing it.
I tried the link and it seemed to work fine but if you still have problems just cut and paste the URL and access it that way. Let me know if it still isn't working and I will just start a new section up on the site real quick and post it there.
Lets try actual html code and see if that works. [ 29 May 2001: Message edited by: Trainart ] [ 29 May 2001: Message edited by: Trainart ]
There we go. Had to go create a photopoint account. I had read that Geocities was not going to let you link anymore to images you have there so I guess that is the case. Anyway, at least I got it going, I'm not totally unskilled at this computer stuff. Now I can get my signature jazzed up.
Trainart, An excellent model, have you thought about entering it in our contest that is running at the moment?
I was thinking about it. I think I saw that I have until the 21st of July but it should be done this week. I will actually have better picture by tomorrow then I will probably decide whether or not to enter it depending on how it comes out. Thank you for the suggestion and comments!
Here are some updated shots. These were taken before the tank weathering was done, but at least you will get an idea of what it will look like. [ 29 May 2001: Message edited by: Trainart ]
Excellent work from what i can see... Looks like the SW has seen a few years too! Is the model based on a prototype or is it just freelanced? Here in Denver we have a refinery complex that i would love to model one day... served by both the UP and BNSF...
It is modeled after one in the upper Midwest. The tanks aren't as dirty and I have modeled them that way. I should have complete pictures tomorrow. The SW is just somehting I decided to add. I figured they would probably have their own and it would be in similar condition.
Can you tell us the weathering process used on the tanks and diesel? I see a bottle of paint next to the model, did you brush it on with a dilutted solution? Mike Antkowiak
I have actually taken some good pictures showing the process on the weathering. I was going to add that when I make the big post on this projet next week so you can see how to do it. It is actually a combination of several methods. I brush on some of it, spray on some and use pastel pencils for the finishing touches. The pictues will show in detail how it is done. It makes for a fantastic highly weathered effect.
Yep, and the 5 of them together cost me less than one Walthers tank. Granted there was some filing and putty fill work to do but if you consider what you save it is worth the time.
A great project well done. Super weathering too. A question for you, in the tank farm you show the connecting pipes with those neat valves to control the flow. Did you make the valves yourself? They are very realistic.
Those come in the pipe extension kit from Walthers. That was a real bear to put together, the instructions weren't very clear at all plus you have to adapt it to what you are doing. Does look good when completed and weathered though. I will get some close-ups of the valve areas later today so you can see what I mean.
The refinery is now done. Next step is putting it up on eBay. Just follow the link below to see all the current pictures of it. Look for the instruction thread here and section on my site next week covering most of the weathering techniques.Click to see Refinery here!
Looks nice... From what i recall of the refinery here, the weathering is more of a grease or grime film, not really rust. It sure would be a messy place to work. Regardless though, nice work again.
